Tele Marketing in UK

Featured Replies

Hi

I would like to contact some potential customers in UK by calling them trying to sell my '3D photos'.

Do anybody know what the rules are? Can I just take the phone and call different companies and offer them my product?

The reason I ask is because I'm from Denmark, and I have no idea what the rules are in UK.

Hope that someone can help me :)

Oliver

I don't know because your a foreign company.

But for small business's they can cold call anyone locally, big business's need to check the phone registers (we're ex-directory so when big companies call us, they're breaking the law, because we've opted out. However local companies who don't have the resources to check the registers aren't breaking the law).

OfCom would be the best place to look for an answer though

EU Electronic Communications Act!

Basically the regs say you're supposed to not call a specific name unless you've got an "existing business relationship" (which means they're a customer/supplier, have been a customer/supplier, have taken a trial, have emailed you etc.). It's the same for emails too by the way. It's not very well enforced though and most places get round this by stretching the definition to the limits, by buying "opted-in" lists and of course, getting countries outside the EU (where most spam calls and mail comes from). Only really persistent offenders (usually on auto dial - which are now illegal) ever get prosecuted though.

You can call switchboard numbers in the public domain (except you can't call anyone on the TPS - Telephone Preference Service) because a corporate identity isn't viewed as a person (these rules came in under Data Protection).

As long as you stick to main business numbers (not someone's private line) and don't call anyone on the TPS (because they put themselves there and probably won't be happy) you should be OK.

It's been a few years since I was responsible for Data Protection and sales calls but that was the last state of play (I did some training at the IDM when the regs came out and, coincidentally edited some of the acts).

Obviously don't take my word for it - check it out, but it won't be too far off the above.

Happy hunting! :D

Great technology. How's it done?

Hi Gareth Daine

Glad you like our (my Brother and I) home site - I guess that's what you refer to. So here is an explanation (a little offtopic though) :)

In very short:

We made some turning devices and made some software for the control of camera and turning device. Then it is easy to make many photos around a product.

Then we made some flash software to present the photos, so you can spin and zoom the product in hand.

Cheers,

Oliver
