Featured Replies

on chickipedia when i click a image the background darkens and the image loads and then is displayed. How do they do this?

on facebook the pages are layed out in a way that i do not believe HTML tables can handle (at least not the tables i have been making in dreamweaver). If the site is layed out using tables then i would appreciate a link to an advanced guide on making HTML tabes as none of the ones i have seen are able to. If not then a guide for how they do that would be much appreciated :)

I also do not know how facebook is able to display the bottom menu at all times

Hi,

When an image is displayed like that it's called a lightbox effect.

It's really easy to have the same functionality on your website & gives a much prettier alternative to showing images in a new window.

Please see the link below:

Hope that is of help to you :)

1. The chickipedia site uses a lightbox to achieve that effect Click Here to see how to put it onto your site

2. Facbook definitely doesn't use tables for its layout; it uses css and div layers. Tables are a depreciated method of building sites and should never be used for layout. If you would like a good starting point for getting out of tabular design and into css, pop over to Html Dog for some great tutorials.

3. The facebook bottom menu goes back to the layout being in DIV format - once you are using CSS you can easily tell an element to stick to the bottom of the window.

Welcome to the forums by the way - why not pop over to the reviews page and show us some of your work for some constructive feedback.

This forum will really help you come along as a designer and a coder.

Welcome.

1. it is nice to see an alternative to the one prior mentioned, and in all honesty i do not know what one i preferr so i'll have to try em both to see what one looks better

2) weak, tables were so easy to work with but i can see why they are not used as often cause doing anything with them is a pain. Nonetheless it looks like i'll be spending quite a bit of time at HTML Dog in the next little bit, or buying a CSS/div book.

3) this DIV format sounds pretty sweet, i spent like 30 min trying to figure out a way to display that with tables and as far as i am concerned it cannot be done (at least cannot be done without using frames).

as far as web design goes i haven't done much that is worth showing off, just basic dreamweaver sites along with some simple PHP script in the background. My only notable one is www.dimg.biz, and even then it sucks pretty hard
