It helps determine how popular a keyphrase is and it's average search volume, it can reveal related key terms aswell. I use this to taylor my search terms/page structure and hopefully uncover some keyword strategies that the competition haven't even thought about doing. Which will hopefully give me the edge! - It's worked well so far for a lot of sites i've worked on

I agree with ben - adwords is the seo tool i use the most. to get more traffic you need your website to show up on the first or second page of a search engine. Start with optimizing your site for a certain keyword (after you use adwords keyword tool) then do some advertising and link building. Then do daily maintenance to get the best results. when i started doing seo on www.bluearcher.com it was on the 4th page of google, now its on the 2nd. but i will keep working until its on the 1st.
