ie6 png issue

Featured Replies

Hi.

I am having an issue with a png I am using in ie6. Needless to say that it's not being displayed properly.

I have researched and tried several methods but can't get any to work even though one javascript solution I have used before and it works (for images that are coded on to the actual HTML page that is). This time the png image is being called in the CSS for the menu bar hover and selected effect.

Can anyone help? The site in question is: http://www.samdelara.co.uk/

Cheers, Sam.

I suspect that the reason your script worked before is because you used an image embedded in the HTML, as opposed to specifying a BACKGROUND image in the CSS.

That said, I see no reason why your .PNG doesn't display in IE6, since there's no transparency in your image - it's .PING transparency that IE6 doesn't support.

I don't have a solution but can I make a couple of suggestions...

Remove this:

background-repeat: repeat-x; repeat:y;

It's not necessary as by default a background image 'tiles' horizontally and vertically. In your case, you don't want it to tile at all, so I'm thinking "background-repeat: none" is better suited.

If that doesn't work, could you not save your image as a .GIF? Since it doesn't have transparency I see no reason to save it as a .PNG in the first place...

Unfortunately I don't have IE6 to see the issue, are you able to upload an image?

Thinks...

Is it a 24-bit .png?

I seem to remember that png-8 won't work.

PNG-8 will work, but can't be partially transparent, only completely, or not at all.

Hi Guys. Thanks for your replies. I believe the image is a png 24.

'Slightlymad' - yes I thought it was to do with the image being in the background. I will try what you suggested with the CSS and yes, I suppose that actually I could tile a .gif! It would be nice to solve this particular issue just for peace of mind though....

Cheers.
