Im building a site for a mate in Aus. Would I need to buy aDomain Name from an Australian company?

( www.######.com.au )

Also, Would I need to use an australian hosting company, or one I already use here in the UK?

Any domain seller that deals in .com.au names will do but there are rules so your mate might have to register it...

 

To be eligible for a domain name in the com.au 2LD, registrants must be:

 

a) an Australian registered company; or

trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory; or

c) an Australian partnership or sole trader;

d) a foreign company licensed to trade in Australia; or

e) an owner of an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or

f) an applicant for an Australian Registered Trade Mark 1 ; or

g) an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or

h) an Australian commercial statutory body.

 

You can host naywhere you like but if the site has a mainly Oz audience it makes sense to host there.
