Hi im half way though my site but the colours just don't work

 

Need advice on chosing good colours

How long would you say it would take you to find the right colours?

I found two sites a while back which helped me (the generator more so).

 

Colour Scheme generator and Colour contrast checker.

 

The second has it's limitations.

 

I also have 'The Principles of Beautiful Web Design by Jason Beaird', which I have found really useful.

No worries.....with regards to how long, I think it depends. If you have a logo maybe worth trying to flow from that. If you know one colour you want, have a peek at the colour generator which can suggest several combinations eg. monochrome, contrast (two), tetrad (four) etc plus you can click the little box at the top to make sure they are 'web safe colours'. You can also click on the variations underneath the wheel. It's really cool (i think ) once you realise what bits you can play with .

Both schemes look fine to me.. but depends what they are for. What do you mean by what order?

 

The second is very bright so would be ok for something smaller (in my opinion) but prob too much for a whole page.

 

The first one is very cool but possibly too dull although you could add greys and white.....

 

I think there needs to bear some relation to the context you are using it in.

 

As an example, I eventually decided on a colour scheme for my website as follows; fish in logo so blue, and carpentry firm

so had an earthy / brown colour too and worked from there. The colour checker helped me decide on the hues to use.

 

I am by no means an expert mind....I have only worked on one website to date.
