August 21, 200718 yr A few years ago I asked an insurance broker about insurance for my web design business... They asked me what I wanted the insurance for. I wasn't sure but it just seemed like something I should do. As a freelancer with a very small turnover I am really unsure what I should be insuring against. So I was just wondering....... Do you have insurance? What type of cover do you have i.e. professional indemnity, public liability etc.etc. ?
August 21, 200718 yr That's a good question Liquid... I only have car insurance! To be quite frank, I don't have any insurance for my freelance work and to be honest i'v never even thought about it. Now you mention it, I feel it is something I should have. What if I get sued, what if someone uses my work for their own..where do I stand? This is actually quite a serious topic, I definitely be ringing round for some quotes. Is it a specialist market though? As i'm not exactly sure who to approach for niche Web Design insurance etc. I'll definitely have a google later, does anyone know any mainstream insurance companies that offer this? I would get yourself insured against public liability for definite, but then would need to ask advice for other areas of cover. Good post Liquid. DK
August 22, 200718 yr It'd be interesting to hear what the insurance companies says. Would you post back here with your findings? At the moment I'm not full time, but if I where to make the leap it'd be something I'd consider. Especially as self-employed I'm personally responsible for the business.
October 30, 200718 yr Hi Guys, THere are lots of different covers available to you. Your Public liabliilty will cover you for any damage that you may cause to person or propoerty whilst on client site, and is often a requirement that most larger firms will ask of all of their contractors. It will also cover any clients that visit your own premises. Professional Indemnity will cover a wide range of things, but the focus is on two main things. 1. Any claim brought against you, by your client, of negligence. i.e you have done something incorrectly, and it has caused them a financial loss, which they are seeking to recover through you. 2. Your breach of anyone elses IP rights. Most modern policies will also cover loss of docs, breach of confidence, libel and slander as well. If you are looking to pursue an action against a 3rd party for infriging your rights, then you may be better off with a legal expenses policy, which will allow you to take an action against someone else. Hope that helps a little bit, thanks, bazzie
