Just wondering if anyone could suggest a good program to get started with.

I think Photoshop maybe to much for me at the moment! And too expensive to just mess around with.

 

What about Paint Shop Pro?

I have had experience with paint shop pro, and it's not bad, quite similar to photoshop. You may also want to consider GIMP (It's freeee!)

Just go with Photoshop. It's not that hard to learn, and will be very handy on your CV. The hardest thing to get your head round is how important the selection tool is. Try and get hold of an "evaluation" copy until you start making money from your work.

I used Paint Shop Pro and Gimp and although they are both good graphics software Photoshop is just in a different league.
