I've set up a new web site for an organisation on my 1and1 windows server and created a new co.uk domain name. The site it replaced had an org.uk TLD (registered with fasthosts) - for haste I registered a co.uk TLD with 1and1 so we could get it up and running as the paper work was coming through slowly. I asked them to point their org.uk domain to the new site and all was well.

 

Naturally the browser displays the co.uk name but they have asked if it can display org.uk as default. If I ask the current registrant if I can transfer to 1and1 will it effect any email acounts they have set up? Also the name servers looks like nothing connected with fasthost - they are ns14.zoneedit.com and ns18.zoneedit.com.

Is there a way of displaying the original org.uk name without any transfering?

If you transfer the domain to 1and1 it will affect the emails, as you will need to recreate the mailboxs which will also require new mailserver settings, normally pop.1and1.co.uk & auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk and a password (but you can keep that the same) - so you would have to add the new settings to your clients email program. Depending how computer literate your client is this would be a better option as the domain is in your control, but there's normally a fee attached to transferring domains.

 

You may be able to setup a domain forwarder, there are 2 types, Frame Forwarding and Standard Forwarding - Frame forwarding will keep the domain ending org.uk in the address bar but display the .co.uk content in the browser. Standard forwarding re-directs the users to .co.uk when someone types in .org.uk.

 

This would be done at the domain registrants end (not 1and1), by making the domain a forwarder their current email setup can be left intact.

Thanks - I didn't know about frame forwarding - it might just be the answer i'm looking for!

is it an apache server and do you have access to use htaccess files? You could use that and it would be better than frames but if not you'll have to do frames.

Cheers, I would prefer to have control of the domain at 1and1 - I'll have a word with the client and try and get them to transfer it. I agree it would make life much easier in the long run .....I'm just a little anxious about the email transfer. The web site is for an organisation who control part of the river cam and have to be contactable at all times. I wouldn't want to mess things up!!
