Why isn't all my pages indexed

Featured Replies

Hi there, i am currently working on a new website at aroundlochlomond.co.uk

I have requested my site to be indexed on google, and after a week or so it seems to be in there at last. The problem is that when i do a info:arounlochlomond.co.uk in google only some of my pages return and seem to be indexed. The main homepage - index.html isn't one of them. why is this?

Also, could someone look at it for me and give me any tips on how to get a better page ranking.

Thanks :)

The first steps would be to submit a sitemap and optimise the onsite aspects of your site - your description and title tags aren't optimal and your content is far from it - there are no headings or structure of any kind. After that it's pretty much all about getting your site out there and 'linked-in'.

Hey,

thanks for your quick reply.

I have already submitted a sitemap with google. This SEO stuff is solid to get right! Could you explain more when you say my description and title tags aren't 'optimal' and also what you mean by no heading or structure, how can i do all this whilst keeping my content relevant?

Cheers

Also cannot see an onsite sitemap anywhere, or many internal links to other content except for the main nav...

No problem - slight delay this time as I sleep during your days (I'm in NZ)!

For the title and header tags.... they share the same basic needs - to be an effective summary of the site for real visitors (never forget that bit or they end-up all "SEO spammy"!) and to help search engines to identify what your site is about. The knack is getting your keywords in descending order of importance with as few non-keyword words as possible AND still making it interesting to humans (these tags appear in search engine results).

Now, without knowing what your specific audience will search for (that's what you need to know) then your title should be something like:

"Loch Lomond guide - local events, accommodation, businesses - Balloch, Alexandria, Dumbarton"

Like I say, this depends on what your audience searches for. Then your description should be similarly constructed, just with more detail.

As for the 'heading and structure' - your markup (the HTML) is weird... What you could do with is a simple hierarchy of headings (H1 main title, H2 & H3 sub titles) and paragraphs that break-up your content so that skim-readers and search engines have a better idea of what your site is about.

Hope that makes sense?! :D

here is the perfect solution for your query.

No, that's not a solution... at best it's giving a name to what must be done, at worst it's a clumsy sales pitch.

Just thought I'd also point out to you Portero that to get indexed you don't have to go off and worry about link-building just yet. The site's I've built get have all been indexed within a few days and begun appearing quite highly in specific searches that they're optimised for... with naff-all links. Start with the basics before being suckered into chasing links around!

Hi Wizely, thanks a lot for your information on this. As i say this whole is SEO is a lot to get the head around, so i appreciate your input. If you have any good SEO examples, i.e your sites you've built, please pass them on to me if you wish :)

I just cant get my head around why 4 of my pages are indexed, but the main page hasn't.

I've changed the content to be more keyword based, and took on a more structured layout. Let me know if I am heading in the right direction

Thanks again
