Im new, a graphic designer who can do a bit of CSS/HTML etc. Usually google for help but got a problem with what Im working on at the moment so thought time was right to see what forums are out there. I can probably help answer questions relating to graphics etc, but Im not the best at coding. I tend to learn things as and when I need to know. Trying as much as possible to hand code in text pad rather than use html editor... but can be a pain in the posterior when Im busy doing graphic stuff and trying to research programming issues too.

I use illustrator and photoshop to do all sorts of print and web design work....flyers posters banners tickets business sets cocktail menus etc for print and i do an online music magazine with some colleagues thats based london (which is in HTML rather than flash). With websites for me its usually a case of think of a really ellaborate design theme/ do the graphics and then panic about how to actually make it work, lol. keeps me on me toes though.

 

Definately a good habit to ditch HTML editors I reckon. I was using dreamweaver but now just use text edit (mac note book) and then when it comes to de-bugging/validating etc I just chuck it in dreamweaver. I've found that even just in a month of trying to hand code it has accelerated my learning of code etc so much...as im not relying on something else doing it. But I guess its a case, for me, of trying to strike the right balance...as I dont need to know everything on the coding side, but want to be able to do things reasonably well. I know graphic designers who design the whole site as an image and then throw it up and chuck hotspots/rollovers on it.... which is nice from a designers point of view because you can be anal about typography etc when its all embedded lol.

uh yeah but its a little embarrassing personally for me, because pretty much everything that's up makes me cringe now to look at it, lots of HTML table layouts etc, and some of the graphics work is quite weak. Im currently working on 'volume2' I have done the new magazine template, and the street scene thing im doing is actually for the new site too.

 

up mag is the site though, obviously go through to magazine. but basically before doing this I hardly had any real web knowledge at all. its only through deep end and other work I have done since that I have learned....because we didnt want to do the magazine in flash for a huge list of reasons so it was my responsibility to then try and work out how to do it in HTML/CSS. The new version will be infinitely better.
