I am trying to use some java script which is brave for me because Im rubbish at it. I have been trying to work this problem out on my own for ages because it seems like it should be so simple....but now after hours of banging my head against a brick wall Im begging anyone who knows for help..... Im trying to open a new window on a time delay...which i can do and Im also trying to specify that window's size and url etc which I can do. BUT although I can do these two things seperately...but when I combine them I manage to mess it up (probably because I dont fully understand how to structure. the code I have to make my window open at right spec etc is to go inside the body tag apparently like <body onload="java script:window.open('1.html','PAGE NAME','height=615,width=6684,scrollbars=yes')"> the code i have found to open window with set delay (in this eg 10 seconds i believe) is setTimeout('window.open()',10000) thus my (constantly failing) combination of the two is like this <body onload="java script:set Timeout('window.open('1.html','PAGE NAME','height=615,width=6684,scrollbars=yes')',10000)"> <p> blah blah where normal content goes </p> </body> Can anyone help? Im sure its achingly simple to open a window of a set size with a time delay...and it's making me really frustrated not being able to figure it out. Any help will be massively appreciated.

uh yeah but its a little embarrassing personally for me, because pretty much everything that's up makes me cringe now to look at it, lots of HTML table layouts etc, and some of the graphics work is quite weak. Im currently working on 'volume2' I have done the new magazine template, and the street scene thing im doing is actually for the new site too. up mag is the site though, obviously go through to magazine. but basically before doing this I hardly had any real web knowledge at all. its only through deep end and other work I have done since that I have learned....because we didnt want to do the magazine in flash for a huge list of reasons so it was my responsibility to then try and work out how to do it in HTML/CSS. The new version will be infinitely better.

Being a bit dense when it comes to web-technical stuff, i get confused by the whole tables vs CSS thing? For example, is there anything wrong with using tables when you are defining everything in CSS? Divs always seem a bit glitchy in comparison. Before you say it I know some of you are probably going to slap me for saying this (and please excuse my ignorance, and feel free to show me the light)... but sometimes I just dont see what the fuss is about. I can understand that its better to define the layout of everything in CSS rather than in the HTML, but is it bad to use CSS defined tables? It does vaildate if you do that?

Thanks for getting back to me eskymo i have just bee browsing all those horizontal sites. In terms of Flash, I don't use it all...I basically always try to do it in HTML/CSS/illustrator/photoshop witout resorting to Flash. I think Javascript is a bit beyond my little art brain too. hmm... I may have to resort to changing to accomodate for the fact that it will just have to start on the left... One thing that I did wonder, is looking at the 1st site, they have put everything inside a window. I wonder if I put a box 955x600px like in my first example, and then put the 6684px scene in a new table/div inside the 955 one? I wonder whether it would still resort back to starting on the left if it was centred with the 955px box?

I use illustrator and photoshop to do all sorts of print and web design work....flyers posters banners tickets business sets cocktail menus etc for print and i do an online music magazine with some colleagues thats based london (which is in HTML rather than flash). With websites for me its usually a case of think of a really ellaborate design theme/ do the graphics and then panic about how to actually make it work, lol. keeps me on me toes though. Definately a good habit to ditch HTML editors I reckon. I was using dreamweaver but now just use text edit (mac note book) and then when it comes to de-bugging/validating etc I just chuck it in dreamweaver. I've found that even just in a month of trying to hand code it has accelerated my learning of code etc so much...as im not relying on something else doing it. But I guess its a case, for me, of trying to strike the right balance...as I dont need to know everything on the coding side, but want to be able to do things reasonably well. I know graphic designers who design the whole site as an image and then throw it up and chuck hotspots/rollovers on it.... which is nice from a designers point of view because you can be anal about typography etc when its all embedded lol.

Hi all, I got a really annoying problem, and I usually just google for help with code and read up and test stuff until I know how to do it; but I can't find a solution to this anywhere. I am a Graphic Designer who also does web (CSS/HTML) but I am not amazing at coding etc. The site Im doing is a big scene on a horizontal scroll, but the idea is that when the user arrives at the site the horizontal scroll should be set in the middle (i.e. so that the user can scroll left and right along the scene). This would seem simple enough, but just doesn't seem to want to work. Is there some kind of code for defining a start position on the scroll? Can you give a percentage value or something. I have done the graphics work, but not entered into the page yet as I will need to alter things around if I cannot make the page start up in the middle. I have been testing with just a black BG and a grey box to mark where the content will hang. In the final version the box in the middle will need to be 6684 px wide, which i know is huge, but its a huge street scene. In this example, the width is set to only 955px just to show how I want the inner segment to sit...everything is centred horizontally and vertically. eg 1 Here shows the problem, once you change the dimensions of the inner segment to a large width which exceeds the width of the window...it screws up the horizontal alignment and makes the page start from the left? eeg 2 Does anyone know how to specify the start position of the scroll? Any help would be massively appreciated...Thanks

Im new, a graphic designer who can do a bit of CSS/HTML etc. Usually google for help but got a problem with what Im working on at the moment so thought time was right to see what forums are out there. I can probably help answer questions relating to graphics etc, but Im not the best at coding. I tend to learn things as and when I need to know. Trying as much as possible to hand code in text pad rather than use html editor... but can be a pain in the posterior when Im busy doing graphic stuff and trying to research programming issues too. So hello....
