n00b learning the basics

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have just started using Dreamweaver CS3 as it is on my sons laptop. I have already run into problems with the menu etc and have posted in the Dreamweaver section.

Any how, reading through a few posts Ive been looking to learn how to code from scratch.

I found some good info on w3schools.com and a few people on here have suggested HTML Dog as a good place to start in other posts.

If you were starting out agian, where would you look?

Thanks.

Once you can learn to write your markup by hand, you'll soon start to wonder why on God's Earth anyone would ever want to use Dreamweaver!

W3Schools is a great place to learn the basics. The other place I would recommend is the W3C's list of HTML 4.01 elements: http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/index/elements.html

That tells you the ins and outs of each element, and what you can and should be using them for. You'll find there's pretty much an HTML tag for everything you could ever want to put in your webpage. Once you've got the structure (or "bones") sorted, then you can start out learning CSS and making your webpage look pretty. :)

Good luck!

Thanks Rachael will check out that link...more for my poor old brain to take in!

Could you check my solution in the other post and let me know if its ok or if its still a terrible way of achieving what I want.

Ta.

Also try Sitepoint's HTML Reference and CSS Reference - personally I like they're better than W3Schools.

As Rachael says get the structure sorted using the right HTML elements for the right job and then dive into the CSS for the layout. If you get stuck, just post here and we'll be glad to help.
