Thank you! Yeah I fully intend on studying up, and down, and back up again. I'm trying to get a grip on the enormity of the task. I'm not particularly intending on taking this up professionally, although, I wouldn't rule it out as I am quite enjoying it so far. This project is intended to be a donation to my local footy club. I guess I just want to get some kind of framework to look at and then assess fully whether I am kidding myself or not.

So, silly ole me wants to build a website. I've done a little research and so far from what I have seen, it is attainable for me. That is not to say that there isn't any more to learn, far, far, far from it. What I mean is, I'm confident I can do it. What I want to build, is a website for my footy club. We have two already and one is a derilict Yahoo site and the other isn't much better, it is very unattractive and doesn't give the user much inspiration, at least it gets updated though. I'd like to build something maybe a little better than this, but along the same lines. http://www.northsjuniors.com.au/ So, I'm trying to get my head around a plan of attack to build it. I'd appreciate some feedback on what I'm thinking. 1. Register domain name 2. Meet with committee and decide on exactly what needs to be in the site. 3. Draw up a site map, on paper or whatever. 4. Write the HTML documents for the pages. 5. Style them in CSS 6. Design, with help from my graphic artist friend, a logo and a header/footer (should be up the list possibly) 7. Have our sponsors submit some logos for publication on the site. 8. Organise photos of coaches/committee/players etc for gallery 9. Organise CMS i.e. Expression Engine or similar. 10. ? Help A few things, I'm not sure of yet; -email links from contacts pages -transitional images i.e the sponsors logos on the top of this page. http://www.southsloganmagpies.com.au/main.php?id=1Good idea or not? -and no doubt, plenty of other things I haven't considered yet.

Thank you bluedreamer. So literally, you build your site and then the CMS can be 'tacked on top?' I like it.

I just checked out the CushyCMS site... I had a look at the video of how it is done and it raises a question... Say, on the homepage of my site, I wanted to have news stories as the feature and as new ones come on, the old ones get pushed down the page. With what I saw on the CushyCMS site, that would mean they'd have to edit the news in the same input box on the Cushy site, more or less typing on the top of thje previous story. I don't know if that would be desirable would it? Any suggestions?

Thanks ElanMan. I struggled to Google this before, because I didn't know what to call it, that is how new I am, after a quick pm from Dizi I found this thread and posted, then googled it again. I think I'm on the right path now. I guess the site will have a news section on the home page, and several team pages that the coaches/managers of the individual teams will update each week. I wonder if it would be much of a step to have each update signed off by the club president or secretary before it becomes public?

Just putting the question out there to the experts on this. As a newbie, I'm trying to find out the scope of what it would take to build an attractive website for my football club, that is user-updateable. What processes are generally used to create/enable this feature? Is their a tutorial out there or anything similar?

Ah OK... Well, this is probably a stupid question, but is there any technical reason, apart from aesthetics, as to why on the linked page, they didn't use a taller background image? They've used an image that is only just over 3/4 of the page long and then backed that up with background colour beneath... http://www.northsjuniors.com.au/

I'm having trouble referencing a gif file I created. I'd like to make it my background image in css but I can only refernce url's... Any hints?

I'm learning HTML/CSS and trying to figure out why some things are done in a particular fashion. Is it OK if I post a link to someone else's website to ask the forumers why they did something a particular way? Or should I just write a long winded written description?

Interestingly enough, I went and tried the tutorials on www.html.dog.com, it says to write; <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> at the top of each document. When I did this my HTML coding for bgcolor was ignored... I checked another site and it mentioned how the standard only recognises certain colours now. Is there anything else that I should be aware of that is ignored by browsers but is taught in HTML? Or was the HTML site I was looking at before telling me stuff that is out-dated?

D'oh! Of course! Thank you! Thanks for the advice on the CSS thing too... Would I be right in saying that the styling with HTML then is out-of-date?

I'm trying to choose a background colour... can you see anything immediately wrong with what I have written above? I've tried a few different colour codes but none seem to work. The text colours work but not the bgcolour.

Thanks frenchbird and calumbrodie! I'm about to ask you some, no doubt, painfully silly questions... please bear with me, I know no better So, we can use notepad? We code away in there using HTML code? Or CSS code? Or both? The files we code in here, e.g photos and backgrounds etc, how do they get dragged up in the finished product? Do we pick where they should be grabbed from by default? To view the 'finished' product or 'work-in-progress' how do we take the Notepad file and apply it to our browser? I am so sorry, I'm sure these are terribly silly questions, I've literally only just started studying this, feel free to ignore me. ...but thanks if you don't

Hi all, thanks for your time. I'm a complete newbie and I'm trying to get a grasp of where I need to start in all of this. I guess I'd really like to know what software I need to produce a quality website. I'm prpeared to go the hard yards. Do I need expensive flashy software/templates to get the job done? Is there free software/templates that will get the job done? I'm currently reading some tutorials on HTML, XHTML, CSS etc. I haven't taken all of it in yet though.

G'day, My name is Steve. I'm from Australia. I'm old hack at general computer use, I guess, although very new at the web-design... I've been looking at it closely for a total of 1 hour to be exact. The reason I'm here is to learn what I need to know about building a site for my sports club. It is a junior rugby league club here in Brisbane, Australia. We currently have a web site but it is very basic. It is one that is given to the club by the sporting authority. It doesn't have much appeal or versatility. So I guess I'd like to learn how to do it myself, as the club is very tight on funds, like all junior sporting clubs I guess. We'd like to grow and I guess rebuild, after a couple of decades of tough times. I think the aim of the site is like many others, to promote traffic flow to give our sponsors exposure, to encourage kids to become involved and to provide a resource for the kids and their parents to use. I think a visually appealing, functional and informative web site would do the club wonders. I am putting the feelers out for the first time and I have to say, the world of web-design is looking a little daunting for someone with 1 hours experience. I would be appreciative if any forumers would be so kind as to point me in the right direction as to where I should start. I guess if there is a resource out there, along side this forum, that is accepted as good starting post, I'd love to know about it. Thanks heaps for reading this. I'm looking forward to learning.
