Custom Post Types & Taxonomies in WordPress without a Plugin: how do you actually use them in real projects?

    Hi dear Designer-Community,🤩
I’m currently revisiting WordPress Custom Post Types (CPTs) and taxonomies and would love to learn how others think about and apply them in practice.
Well, out of the box, WordPress gives us pages, posts, categories, and tags — which is often enough for simple sites. But once projects grow and content starts to diversify, things can get messy quickly if everything is forced into the same structures.
That’s where CPTs and custom taxonomies come in: they let us define what kind of content exists and how it should be organized, instead of bending everything into posts and pages.
What I’m curious about is less the “how” (there’s plenty of docs and plugins for that) and more the design thinking behind it:

When do you decide a certain new content type deserves its own CPT? What does drive this process!? How granular do you go with taxonomies and those things before it becomes overengineering?  Do CPTs improve  the wohle thing of clarity for editors — or sometimes even make things harder? How do CPTs influence navigation, SEO, and - besides that - the very much needed long-term maintainability? Have you ever regretted introducing a CPT (or not introducing one) in a certain project?
well dear friends  - I’m especially interested in real-world patterns, trade-offs, and even mistakes — how different teams and individuals structure content, and how those structures evolve over time.
I am really looking forward to learning from your approaches and seeing how these ideas connect and diverge across projects._

Look forward to hear from you
    greetings 🤩

    many thanks dear Pixelated,
just noticed your comment. Thanks for the heads up:

yeah i also played with Figma - its an awesome tool - it even runs on mobile phone - and you can collaborate with others too.  I also tried out the open-source equivalent once..

    thanks Pixelated  for your tipps.
BTW: a great place - to share ideas,  thoughts and knowldge. I am glad to be here.
    greetings🙂

Top tip. Keep it simple. Use large images not thumbnails. Don't add any special effects or animations. Don't clutter the page.
This a demo of a very simple gallery/portfolio site:

The focus is on the pictures. The theme is irrelevant.

many tahnks for the reply -  in fact - i share this idea

right said - i love WP - no doubt - and i think youre right - the display modes we have here - are just very good.

immich is used by some guys here  in my hometown - they said that it is terrific and caused them to switch from google-photos.

but as mentioned -above. I really like the WordPress-solution..
    greetings

if it's your hobby and you want somewhere to post the pictures it's simple.
Install wordpress and a portfolio theme (all free) and upload the images. You can edit, order, categorise, caption and display in various methods. This is how it's done by millions of people around the world.
Or you could use a site builder like squarepsace or wix.
If you want to use immich that's up to you but I can't see the point.
  6. Thanks
    I'm now even more confused.
I host thousands of pictures on my server. They are all viewable on various websites. It's never been a problem for Google of my visitors from around the world.
As for editing, it's all done offline before uploading.
Why are you asking this question? For whom are these pictures? Are they part of a business plan or are they just for you and your friends to look at.

    That's a very confusing post.
Why do you need to add anything to the server? You just need to upload to an images folder on the server and add the links to your website. Pretty much how it's been for the last 30 years.
  8. Thanks
Thanks for the heads up - the more quality FOSS the better!
  9. Thanks
You need to learn how to format your posts.
As an aside, my time is valuable - which is why I don't do graphics. I pay someone to do the work for me.

It's quite simple. You just make your image a background on the page body.
Use your code inspector to find the appropriate DIV.

  12. Thanks
SVG is a good format for icons and simple images.
For anything more complex I usually use webp (it's the one Google likes).
  13. Thanks
I tend to use gimp as it meets my needs.
The simple solution is to save the SVG as a transparent PNG and use layers to stack this on the background.
You may be able to do this as an SVG using illustrator as @Jogeta316 suggests
  14. Thanks
You can do this with an SVG?
    I am surprised.
But if this is for their net grid with gradient background I'm not sure and SVG is the best format. In fact even creating the grid as an SVG seems a little odd as there are better ways to draw the image.
  15. Thanks
You don't mean combining them in something like Illustrator, do you? If so - that's absolutely possible! Open whatever you want to be the bottom layer, then place what you want to be the top layer in the file. Save it as a new file, export as .svg and you're done!
Don't forget to use something like https://svgomg.net/ (not affiliated) to keep file sizes down once you're done.
  16. Thanks
    Not really.
If your SVG is transparent you can use CSS to overlay the images but it's not a good solution.
You are better off saving as a PNG and then using the align/overlay tools in your image editor.

I wouldn't. I leave the palette up to the client.
If this image is only for decoration I'd use very light or muted colours so it doesn't distract from the content. You almost want the visitor to the site to not even notice the image.

Depending on the size and purpose of this test image you may be better off saving as webp file. Some platforms (like wordpress) won't let you import SVG because they can be very insecure.

I've been playing around on Figma and you can definitely recreate this on figma and export as an SVG !

Then just do as suggested and build up the layers: gradient backgound then the dots on top with a blur effect.
    But...
What is the purpose of the image? How does it enhance the webpage, advert, poster, whatever?

Do you have an example of the type of image you want to create? Or is the image you showed us what you want to achieve?

You can probably do it on all the software in your list. The principles look like the vector artwork is positioned on different layers, and that these layers have a gradient blur applied to give a depth of field effect.
Hope that helps. Feel free to share your results!
