  1. Hi all. Ok, so I'm working on a website for the place where I work, and my boss wants it to be set up so that he can easily edit the front page in a text-editor sort of format (where it's easy to change the font, color, formatting, etc.) so he can post information regarding announcements and such. My first idea was to use a blog script such as Cutenews, but I don't really need it to be a full-out blog. Just one page that can be edited from a control panel. what should be the best way to do this? (I can code PHP from scratch or use a ready-made script if anyone knows of one. I don't want it to use MySQL, though.) Thanks, Robin
  2. Hm. Well, originally I was going to do something more like that, but I tried it with the wood and I liked it too much!
  3. Here's a design I'm working on for my portfolio site. It's going to be really simple, just so that I can have something to show my work on. Please let me know what you think! Thanks! http://img381.imageshack.us/my.php?image=previewav0.jpg
  4. I agree that the contrast between the text and background needs to be a bit more. I also think you could do something a little more exciting for the rollover on the navigation. Other than that it looks awesome!
  5. Yeah... the thing I don't get through, is for one site, the might be on the first page of results for "puppies", but the 5th page of results for "puppy". This is true with one of my sites and it is extremely annoying. D:
  6. So I have a question... something I have wondered about for a while. Search engines seem to recognize that the plural form of a word is the same word... (such as "dog" and "dogs"). But depending on which one you search for, you get different results. Also, how does this affect words that use 'ies' for the plural form? Like, "puppy" or "puppies" ? are these considered the same word? If not, which ones do you want to have in meta tags, the singular or plural form?
  7. Yeah it's a new site, so I guess it will take a while longer. I heard that having a lot of good backlinks is a good way to get started?
  8. Sorry I'm still kinda new at this so please bear with me! Here's what it says: Googlebot last successfully accessed your home page on Sep 5, 2008. More information. No pages from your site are currently included in Google's index. Indexing can take time. You may find it helpful to review our information for webmasters and webmaster guidelines. It says that Googlebot has accessed my page recently but it still hasn't been indexed. I submitted it a few weeks ago. I was just wondering if this means I'm doing something wrong, or if I just need to wait longer. How long does it normally take for a site to be indexed? Thanks for the help!!
  9. Thanks everyone!! Ok, so I'll get rid of the tables and add some more padding here and there. I'm also going to make the peppermints into links as soon as I get the time. As for the ads, I guess I'll experiment with them in some different places and see which works best.
  10. Thanks for the input! I don't really want to get rid of the ads since that is our only way of making money off the site so far. I'll consider your other suggestions.
  11. Hi! I just launched my newest project, justgingerbread.com! [link] Please take a look and let me know what you think about the layout and such. Constructive criticism is appreciated, but keep in mind that I am still working on it a lot. So this is something my mom and I have been working on for a while now. She loves both making gingerbread houses and blogging so last year I promised her that for Christmas time this year I would help her set up a gingerbread-related blog. Well, it grew to more than a simple blog, as you can see. The purpose of the site is to teach people how to bake and build gingerbread houses. In the future we may decide to sell pre-baked gingerbread house kits, too. Well, please take a look and let me know what you think! Thank you!! Edit: Oh, I forgot to add, the peppermints at the top were originally going to be links (with text over the candy image) but I was holding off on that because I know image links are bad. Any ideas?
  12. Um, theres not really much to it yet.. and I'm not crazy about the logo or the bright green/yellow color scheme.
  13. Cool, thanks! I'll go check it out. Edit: It doesn't seem to be working... I keep getting a parse error. Any idea what might be causing this? I can post the code if that'd help.
  14. So my website layout is coded in this format... one page might look like this: <?php include('header.php')?> Main text and stuff here. <?php include('footer.php')?> All of the pages use the same header and footer file, so I can easily make changes to the layout without having to edit every single page. The 'header.php' file includes all the stuff that goes in the <head></head>, and also the banner at the top of the site and the left sidebar. The problem is I want to have a different title and meta tags (keywords and description) on some of the pages. If I put this before the <?php include('header.php')?>, then I will have two titles, two sets of keywords and two descriptions. It seems to just disregard the second title (the one in the header.php), which is good, but I'm not sure about the meta tags. Um, so is this the best way to do that or what should I do?
