Thanks for these suggestions. Are these CMSes actually reasonably popular (I see that they do get mentioned on this forum, so they clearly do have some enthusiastic adopters!)? They don't have articles on Wikipedia, for example, which I tend to use as a good rule of thumb as to how popular something is in real life, and so that worries me a little.. Or is it just that so much of the web developer community has built up experience with the likes of Drupal and WordPress and so it becomes much harder to anything else to get a foothold, even if it may be better? I'd not be averse to paying for something (as software development obviously has costs to it), but the prices are a bit more than I'd be willing to pay for essentially hobbyist use, unfortunately.

Hi, Can anyone recommend a lightweight and easily-updated CMS for me? (I know this is a "how long is a piece of string" question!) Ease of updating is important, in case of security issues (something that can update itself automatically, or with 'one click' would be ideal), and lightweight, so that updating isn't a chore otherwise and because I don't think I need too many fancy features(?!). My feature requirements hopefully aren't too onerous and are probably fairly typical: LAMP-based (where P could be PHP or Python) Rich text editor (but the ability to use Markdown or similar could also be nice, but not essential) Image gallery (although simply the ability to insert images in pages would probably be 'good enough') Post/page categories/tags Blog or news article posts as well as hierarchical pages Ease of creating themes Automatic creation of navigation menus, breadcrumb trails, etc Friendly URIs Ability to easily download the database (or content files) for backup purposes Good support community if needed (Nice to have but not essential: ability to have pages which include custom code to make web applications [that sounds a bit grandiose] (or use third-party modules)) I don't need commenting, in fact the absence of it or ability to disable it would be a plus, given the bane of comment spam and vulnerabilities Something like WordPress might well be good enough (and I have used it long ago in the past, but not for anything fancy), but the fact that WordPress isn't held in high regard for its code quality and security and the way that it is architected does put me off a bit. On the other hand, it is incredibly popular.. I have dabbled a (very) little with Drupal, and it seems very powerful, but I fear it may be a bit too heavyweight for my needs (although I do like at least the idea of drush), and possibly difficult to keep secure, especially if I have little time (this is just for a personal website). I'd not be averse to a wiki system, perhaps (as long as I could easily theme it to look fairly presentable). MediaWiki is possibly an obvious choice but I have not downloaded it to experiment with myself. I'm not really very aware of things in the Python world, although given that PHP also has some issues as a language from its history, I'm open to Python suggestions as well. I have a moderate amount of PHP programming experience, but have really only looked at Python in passing, although I have a feeling that it would be a useful thing to know about at least a little as the general feeling seems to be that it is perhaps a better designed language.
