  1. So the process goes as follows?: FORM.html (gets user input and passes to) ---> PROCESS.php (creates query and talks to an SQL database?) ---> Database (returns results to process.php?) ---> New window opens with an embedded inline frame (inline frame contains users results) Is this pretty much what you are trying to do?
  2. Thanks for replies. I'm learning about session variables now, but I'm having a bit of trouble. Is there an alternative to include 'file.ext';? (not require) I have a parent php file that compiles an SQL Query based on user-input, and at the end of it I use include 'file.ext'; to link to the child php file that displays the querys results. The problem being, that the child php file that displays results, calls on itself. This, of course, re-runs the parent php file as well and empties all my variables that were originally set from a FORM POST... :/ I need to be able to execute the parent php file once only, and have the include''; child php file call on itself without re-running the parent code. Thanks for any replies, Jarrad
  3. This might be worth a look: http://www.webdesignerforum.co.uk/index.ph...p;hl=css+layout Its a simple way to avoid troubles with inter-browser compatibility. I dont think its W3C standard though?
  4. I have a form. Users choose options from this form and the values are submitted to a PHP file. The PHP file takes the users values and performs a customized SQL Query. The results are split so that only 5 results show per page, with links at the bottom to "next" and "previous" results pages. I'm using $_server['php-self'] to re-submit the query when the user clicks "next" or "previous". But the users values from the original form, seem to be forgotten and the new query fails (to show page 2's results) because it no longer has user input. Still with me? (sorry for any bad explanation) How do I pass the users values again so that the PHP can keep performing the query? Thanks, Jarrad
  5. Hi Mihai, Thanks for your reply. I thought there must be something I was missing problem fixed, no fuss! (interesting how CSS can accept and process equations, I was not aware of this until I tried it) Much appreciated for your help, Jarrad
  6. I have a DIV box that I call a TITLE-STRIP. Its basically used to show a strip of color across the top of a containing DIV, which I then write headings into. My question is this: I use: width: 100%; to make the TITLE-STRIP stretch edge-to-edge inside its containing DIV. I also need to use padding-left: 6px; on the TITLE-STRIP so that the text inside sits away from the left edge of the DIV. The problem arises here, FF3 hangs the TITLE-STRIP DIV 6px over the right edge of its container when I use this code. So I came up with this: width: (100%-6px); Which works beautifully, but, is it bad coding? Or is there a better way to do this that I'm missing? Thanks Jarrad
  7. It seems to look fine in my Firefox 3 on Win Vista..? Maybe a screenshot would help to clarify the layout problem you're seeing. Are you using separate stylesheets for each browser? This is an effective way to make sure that all users will be able to see your site correctly. If you're interested in incorporating separate CSS Sheets, take a look at: http://www.webdesignerforum.co.uk/index.ph...p;hl=css+layout I'm not too up on how to actually code it to display in IE though :/ Jarrad
  8. It is definitely because you did not use anti-aliasing when you made the images. You've done the right thing by using the PNG format, but you CAN afford to anti-alias them as well. Take a look at this URL - all the icons on this page are anti-aliased PNGs with a transparent background and they look fine (the grey background color comes from the containing DIV box): Example of AA PNGs (I use Photoshop to make graphics) Jarrad
  9. Legend! After a little tweaking, I settled on padding:4px for the container, and margin-bottom:4px for the content-divs and it looks perfect. Thankyou for your help! I didn't realise that it was bad practice to use relative positioning all the time :/ Thanks for taking the time for me, Jarrad Here's a link to the current draft that shows it in all its glory http://home.exetel.com.au/Jazzy/index2.html
  10. No matter what I try, the container DIV still won't wrap to cover the footer DIV
  11. I still cannot get it working. At present, I'm only styling it in FIREFOX, so don't worry if it looks wonky in IE. Here is a temporary Website URL: http://home.exetel.com.au/jazzy/index.html Note the Dark grey container box doesn't extend down and wrap around the green "footer" div? Here is the relevant CSS Code: body { font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; align: center; } .select_a { background-color: #CCCCCC; font-size: 10px; height: 100px; } input { background-color: #9edf22; font-size: 10px; border: 2px solid #000000; } a:link { color: #CC3300; text-decoration: none; } a:visited { color: #CC3300; text-decoration: none; } a:hover { color: #CC3300; text-decoration: none; } a:active { color: #CC3300; text-decoration: none; } img { border: none; } .container3 { background-color: #666666; width: 800px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; } .header1 { background-color: #289ee2; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12px; width: 790px; height: 30px; position: relative; left: 4px; top: 4px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: 1px solid #2b2b2b; } .header2 { background-color: #CCCCCC; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12px; width: 790px; height: 78px; position: relative; left: 4px; top: 8px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: 1px solid #2b2b2b; } .menubar1 { background-color: #9edf22; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12px; width: 790px; height: 23px; position: relative; left: 4px; top: 12px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: 1px solid #2b2b2b; } .welcome { background-color: #AAAAAA; text-align: justify; font-size: 10px; width: 392px; height: 168px; float: left; position: relative; left: 4px; top: 16px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: 1px solid #2b2b2b; } .news { background-color: #AAAAAA; font-size: 10px; width: 392px; height: 168px; float: right; position: relative; right: 4px; top: 16px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: 1px solid #2b2b2b; } .search { background-color: #AAAAAA; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12px; width: 790px; height: 148px; float: left; position: relative; left: 4px; top: 20px; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-align: center; border: 1px solid #2b2b2b; } .browse { background-color: #AAAAAA; font-weight: bold; font-size: 12px; width: 790px; height: 148px; float: left; position: relative; left: 4px; top: 24px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: 1px solid #2b2b2b; text-align: center; } .footer { background-color: #9edf22; font-size: 9px; width: 790px; height: 30px; float: left; position: relative; left: 4px; top: 28px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border: 1px solid #2b2b2b; text-align: center; } .title_strip { background-color: #999999; width: 100%; height: 25px; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-align: center; position: relative; top: 4px; } .textbox { background-color: #AAAAAA; text-align:justify; border: none; padding-left: 6px; padding-right: 6px; margin: 0px; } .clearfix:after { content: "."; display: block; height: 0; clear: both; visibility: hidden; } .clearfix {display: inline-block;} /* Hides from IE-mac \*/ * html .clearfix {height: 1%;} .clearfix {display: block;} /* End hide from IE-mac */
  12. I tried to float the container DIV, but ran into a couple of problems: By adding float:, you need to assign it a value. Assigning left; or right; moves the whole website from its desired position in the centre, and assigning inherit; or none; doesn't cause the container to wrap the contents.. Also, how does assigning a float value to a container effect float values on DIVs inside the container? I have a footer bar at the bottom of the page that never seems to get wrapped in the container, unless I set the height of the container to a pixel value. Jarrad
  13. I have a container DIV that is centered and has a width of 800 pixels. I have heaps of other fixed-size DIV boxes inside this container that make up the content of my homepage. On the homepage, the total height of the content is 600 pixels. I want to use the container DIV globally on all the other pages in the site, but the content on the other pages in the site has different heights than the homepage. How can I make the container DIV adjust its height to fit whatever contents are displayed inside? (presently, the container DIV only extends down the page about 100 pixels from the top and then stops, unless I specify a set height in pixels) Jarrad
  14. Hold the CTRL key and then scroll your mouse scrollwheel. Does this fix the problem you are having? Jarrad
  15. Tables are considered a "no-no" when it comes to webpage design and layout. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are much more powerful, customizable and browser-accepted. You'll start having a nightmare of a time with Tables when you begin trying to make your site look the same between Firefox, InternetExplorer and Safari. You really are better off using CSS, rather than tables. You're just going to have to take the time to learn how it all works. Maybe the design you are trying to do should be put aside until you make a few more basic sites using CSS? You could also use an HTML Image map for the menu. Google <map></map> and see if it might be useful. Its basically turning all those buttons into one (or more) big PNG or JPG images and then using the map function to make certain areas of the image clickable.
  16. I usually write down all the elements that will be included on the site: Header, titlebar, menubar, welcome note, newsbox, search bar, footer etc. I then sketch out (on paper) a rough design and find a spot for all these elements to fit onto the page. I then write out the color-scheme and name all the page elements with colors. Only after I have a good idea of what i actually want, do I open Dreamweaver and start making up the template with DIV boxes. Once I've got a template, I start to use photoshop to make icons, logos, images, backgrounds and buttons and plug them into the design. When the template is finished, I add content. Jarrad
  17. Jazzy replied to Revs's topic in Server Side
You might be able to use PHPs include'file.php'; command...? Eg: <?php $ban = "127.0.0.1"; //IP to ban if($_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] == $ban) { [b]include 'index.php'; [/b] echo 'DENIED!!'; exit; } ?> You can change the file name to a page on your site that suits. I think it'll still boot the user if you have the EXIT; command after the include, but someone should confirm if I'm on the right / wrong track. Jarrad
  18. Thanks for the help everyone. I've now managed to write my very first (working) Webpage-based, User-customizable SQL Query that returns results! hmm, now for the tough stuff... LoL Jarrad
  19. Thanks for the input guys. It looks like I have a few ways to have a play with. Just as a bit of background info: The array is made from a User selecting 1 to 5 choices from a Form Selection Box, and once the Users selections are taken from the array and passed into individual variables, they will be used in SQL Queries to display customized results. I'll let ya's know how I get on with it. Thanks again! **Mihai - They did come from a $_POST array, but I passed that into a single PHP $variable.**
  20. I have an Array that holds between 2 and 5 pieces of data. How would I extract these pieces of data so they are stored in separate $variables? It needs to be done with a loop statement, I think.. because the amount of data in the array will change based on User input. I'd like to be able to use the variables in my MySQL queries. Thankyou! Jarrad
  21. I have an SQL query that outputs a result like this: Table 1 Item.................Color 1......................Black 1......................Blue 1......................Green 2......................Black 2......................Red 2......................Green 3......................Black 3......................Red This SQL-Query-Result shows that items 1, 2 and 3 are available in different colors. I want to output these to the screen in the following format: Table 2 1......................Black, Blue, Green 2......................Black, Red, Green 2......................Black, Red So each item is only listed once, and their available colors are compressed onto one line (as above). This is the code I have so far, but I don't know how to go about compressing the colors onto one line. Presently, the data is output to the screen like Table1 at the top of the page.. How do I make it look like Table2? $result = mysql_query($query); while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result, MYSQL_ASSOC)) { echo "{$row['item_number']} echo "{$row['color']} }
  22. I'm on the same learning curve as you, and I've just started learning PHP and MYSQL. As I understand it, there is not much PHP and MYSQL cannot do with regards to dynamic interactive web content (short of flash type stuff). You'll need to download a program called WAMP (for windows), or LAMP (for linux). This package contains all the programs you'll need to run a PHP / SQL (database) server on your local machine for testing and learning purposes. A program like Adobe Dreamweaver can also help, but is not entirely necessary. Good luck! Jarrad
  23. Hi, Below is a picture of my database tables, and their relationships. I was hoping someone might have a quick look and tell me if I'm on the right track, or if I need to: Change PRIMARY keys Change INDEX / FOREIGN keys Change Table Structures Also, I'd like to add a table that stores the various CALIBERS that firearms are available in. I'm thinking the relationship would be many-to-many, as a firearm can have many calibres, and a calibre is available for many firearms...? How would I make the CALIBRE table? What fields should the table contain, and how should it relate to the FIREARMS table? I'd like to be able to output a list of firearms, and show available calibres for each of those firearms. Just to help out, the database will be used to: - search for firearms and their available calibres - show retailers that sell a particular make of firearm - show reviews that owners (users) submit. These will be shown alongside each firearm searched for Thanks for any help! Jarrad
  24. Attached is the code showing how I have got it to work with the first of 5 option fields: $option_action = $_POST['option_action']; $option_make = $_POST['option_make']; $option_calibre = $_POST['option_calibre']; $option_stock = $_POST['option_stock']; $option_barrel = $_POST['option_barrel']; if (count($option_action) > 1) { $temp = implode("', '",$option_action); $where_option_action = " AND action IN ('".$temp."')"; } else { $where_option_action = " AND action = '$option_action[0]' "; } $query = "SELECT * FROM firearms WHERE 1=1 $where_option_action "; I will replicate this for the other option_fields and try to optimize it into a function (If I can! ) Thanks again for your help Mihai, its great to see people still have time for the 'newbies'! Regards, Jarrad
  25. Thankyou for your reply. I'll revisit this today and see if I can get it working properly. Much appreciated, Jarrad
