    I saw a £99 E-careers course listed on a usually reputable recruiter's website and, like any wary Internet user, searched for reviews to confirm that it was too good to be true. I'm really glad I found this thread. Thanks, all. (P.S. As a complete beginner, I'm finding the free courses on codeacademy.com quite helpful if variable in quality.)
