Thanks for the responses. Responsive Design sounds like the best option, but I'm concerned that the images displayed, when reduced via a percentage to fit smaller resolutions, will lose quality, thus resulting in pixelation. Is there some way to ensure that an image scaled down via a percentage will have clean looking results? Or am I just totally mistaken about this in the first place?

Hello! I'm feeling a little guilty posting here a question that has been asked a lot over the years - What resolution should I design for? I've done research, but I'm very new to web design. There are lots of answers out there, and it can be hard to see which answers are the best. Additionally, lots of information that I come across is a few years old, so I have to wonder if it is relevant anymore. At any rate, I want to describe my specific concerns so that at least the answers I get here will be a little more "custom fitted." I am designing an artist's website. All of the design is being done in Photoshop CS5.5. I'm just not sure which resolution to design for. When larger images or files are exported to flash (which I'm also working with), they seem to get resized (?) and therefore appear pixelated. I want to avoid this, as the website will be image-heavy and relies to a large extent on the quality of the images. If the website is designed for a smaller screen resolution (800x600) won't the site appear small or empty to viewers with a larger resolution? It seems that one way or the other, many viewers of the site will be looking at a less enjoyable and interesting version than I am intending. Admittedly, we see many image-heavy sites out there, and they mostly seem to be doing just fine. What are some of their solutions to these problems? And what would be your solutions?
