    I dont stick to any number except the 960 grids system ( just recently, before that I've never known about anything related to number in photoshop LOL).

    I don't really 'try' to stick to anything, its just easier to work out in your head when you have a whole round number like 1000x1000 (creating images) or 1800x1000 (creating websites) after that, for websites I get a grid system I want and crop appropriately

    In photoshop? normally work on 1200 wide 1700 high and crop or make bigger as i need

    I do try and stick with even, purely as it is easier from a mathematical point of view. There are times when things have to be odd numbers, when you start getting technical wither borders, padding, floating etc etc

    could you have the image as a background image for the div and then just use a css hover applied to the div to change the background image?
