MWP

Hmmm. Ok, two conflicting idea's. The website I already have is www.uksecurity-directory.co.uk and I have also got jobsforsecurity.org.uk and jobs4security.org.uk. Is it worth having those second sites set-up with a content rich homepage, but having all the menu links redirect to the original directory website. I'm really conflicted on what to do at the moment as opinions overall from further research seem to be split. Thanks for the input so far.

I posted this question in the domain section before but have had no response and I kind of guess its more of an SEO question. I have an industry specific directory website with a blog attached. I'm number one on Google for most key phrases and those that I'm not I'm steadily climbing. I want to add a job board for the same industry and would like it to be a part of my current directory website to create one brand if you like, but am wondering if it would be better to set it up as a separate entity. I have a new domain name ready to go but want the opinions of you fine folk on what the better option would be. Shall I crate a completely new website and "partner" it, so to speak, with the current directory or should I just create a sub-domain within my current website?? Opinions please! Many thanks.

I have a company directory website that is industry specific and now want to add a jobs section to it. I've found a pretty decent domain name and all the other job websites that are specific to this industry are pretty weak. Would the best bet be to start a new website and "partner" it with my current directory so to speak or just set up a sub-folder on my site for the jobs board and maybe buy the domain I've seen and redirect it? Part of me is thinking, put the jobs section on my current site as that is number one in Google for it's primary keywords and hopefully piggy back off that, but then on the other hand, I'm thinking that doing that might restrict the jobs board getting the top spot because it'll be part of a different type of website, albeit in the same industry?! Just curious for some opinions please. Thanks.

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, I think I got it right though?! I have an adwords account that had 4 websites running campaigns on it (I didn't realise that I could set up multiple accounts). I set up an ad campaign 8 months ago for an affiliate marketing attempt which I'll call A(I'm trying my hand at few things) and ran it for 2 weeks with no problems or errors. Then recently I added the other three websites (I'll call B, C and D) I have to the same Adwords accounts (these are all business websites/blogs). Last week in the space of 4 hours between 1am and 5am I get 9 emails telling me about errors I must fix otherwise my account will be suspended with the 9th email saying my account was suspended due to me not resolving the issues (I'm guessing Google don't account for the fact that in the UK most people are asleep between 1 and 5am??). Anyway, I spoke to the help and support team who told me what the errors were (they were all minor errors to be honest, mainly for my fitness website B, an example of one is I quoted a guy called Dick Hoyt as saying "you can do anything you want to, you just need to make up your mind", which Google deemed a misleading claim.) Now the original website (A) I used for affiliate marketing was only mentioned in the warning email because it was linked to the other offending websites (B &C). There were no mentions of errors on the website or adverts at all. So as I haven't used that ad campaign on website A for 8 months I decided to delete the campaign and then proceeded to delete the website. This is where my problems have started. Because I deleted website A too quickly after deleting the ad campaign the Google team then flagged up the ad campaign as pointing to an error page (even though I had deleted it). I called again and explained that I had deleted the website only to be told I needed to reinstate the website so they could get rid of the 404 error on their system and I could then delete the website again and that would un-suspend my account and free up websites B, C & D. Now one of the reasons I wanted to delete that campaign is because one of the websites that I was advertising for has changed it's content, and I think owner, and is now just a static sales page. Anyway I reinstate website A, speak to Google and they now tell me that one of the domains that my ads were pointing to is in violation of their terms (the website with the changed content). They tell me that they can't change the ads because they've been deleted from their system and all that remains is this 404 error and that I need to get that website (which I don't own or even know who does) changed to meet their terms because I am now linked to that website. So basically websites B, C, & D are now currently banned from running adwords because a website I was promoting has now changed hands and changed content and it seems there is nothing that Google can do, or so they tell me? I've explained that I don't want website A or any link to this other sales page but they're basically saying tough luck (to be fair they haven't been as blunt as that and have been very helpful in explaining all the minor little errors I've made). I've even asked if this adwords account could be closed but allow the other 3 websites (B, C & D) to be set up individually on different accounts as per their instructions, but they tell me unless I can get the content of this other site changed then they can't unlock those websites! Has anyone had anything similar to this or know what the likelihood of them changing their decision is? I'm currently waiting for a response but the guy I spoke to didn't make it sound too promising! I know there are other options out there but if I can I'd like to keep Google. Thanks for your time.

Yeah the content will be exactly the same, in fact it will actually increase my content as instead of each company only having a link each, they're now going to have their own dedicated advertisement page. My worry was that I've seen a few places say that because of the structure of some WordPress themes it can drop your rankings, but from what I've seen so far I'm guessing that has more to do with free templates than premium ones. On a side note does yourself or anyone else know how I can remove the nofollow attribute from a text box. Basically I have some text boxes for people to copy code out of and place on their own website to link back to mine for a free entry on the directory. On my static site this wasn't a problem because it displayed exactly how I coded it but on the WP site it is automatically adding the nofollow attribute which is unnecessary as this is a link for someone else to use pointing back to my site. The only solution I can find is to turn of nofollow for the whole site, which I don't really want to do.

Thanks for the input, I think maybe I didn't make myself clear though. I'm fine with WordPress and setting up a static page. I'm just worried that switching my entire site, bar a few pages, from a static site that uses php to show the entries over to full WP will affect my positioning on Google etc? I'm guessing from your response that it wouldn't be a problem in terms of ranking etc.

I'm after some advice on what the best course of action would be for my website. I have a security Directory website and have so far been manually inputting company requests into the database. I've been trying to learn php so I could try and create my own CMS so that the requests would be auto injected and then i just approve them like how WordPress works. The problem is that the rate of companies I'm getting through, coupled with other things like work etc means I can't learn it fast enough and as such it is now becoming a right ball ache to keep up. Because of this I decided to install WordPress into a subdirectory to run the whole company directory and have it all set out the way I want it etc and am almost ready to turn it live and get rid of my old method. The problem is that my front page is still a static php page and the two parts of the site look very different. So here's my question: Should I put the whole website into WordPress, as most of it will be dynamic pages anyway or should I keep the static page as it is and try my best to get it looking like the WordPress theme (which is Socrates by the way)? If I transfer it all over to a WP site is it likely to affect my rankings at all (I've recently got to Page Rank 1 and am currently number 1 in Google)? This is my main concern to be honest as this site was initially devised as a way for me to learn webdesign/coding and I've worked bl00dy hard to get it to where it is today and I'm now starting to get some good, increasing user stats and it would be rather depressing to suddenly drop all of it! Any ideas/suggestions or advice based on past experience would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks for your input. As said just wanted some opinions really. My website is doing well and only getting better so am not too fussed. Was just suggested that I approach the web master by someone else. Maybe I should be flattered that this site, more so their Facebook page, has almost the exact same copy as mine. Out of curiosity, where does the line get drawn on this. If the copy has been copied word for word but the websites are completely different in appearance, apart from the duplicate content problems, is that grounds to start requesting removal/amendments, or is that only acceptable if the second site is also similar in appearance. And likewise if the website is similar in appearance but a few key words in the copy have been changed??

OK, thanks. That's why I asked, I've seen some websites that suggest contacting the site owner because of the whole main paragraph on the front page being almost a carbon copy, but I didn't think it was enough to justify it. I think I'll leave it anyway, as I'm not too fussed, just wanted some opinions.

Guy's I run a Security Directory and the other day I received an invitation to another security directory. After looking at the front page I can see that their content is very, very similar to mine, in fact 1 or two sentences are the same. But is it enough for me to start requesting the removal/editing of the page? I've never come across this before and am a little unsure of what to do so would appreciate your opinions? Sorry to jump on the thread but I'm after beginner books and thought rather than creating a new question would just jump in here! I've got a website that uses php to display security companies from my database and it all works fine, but I now want to integrate automatic database inputting by the user because it's getting rather time consuming adding all the requests (I'd like to set up a page similar to WordPress admin page for comments where I can review the requests and either approve or decline them) and am not sure where to look. My php knowledge is basic but is that book you quoted the sort I'd need or is there any others that you'd recommend? Thanks.

Interesting read. I suppose as someone who is still a bit wet behind the ears that sort of problem never occurred to me. I suppose I'm luck so far in that the only problems I've had, haven't been with service and are more to do with me still learning.

I use 1&1 for my web hosting as, well I signed up as I was learning so didn't really know any better, but I keep hearing how bad they are yet I've never had a problem with them, my site's have never been down and the hosting packages I've set up have been done really quickly. Also I've never had any problems with uploading sites. I will admit their support teams are useless and I always end up ignoring their advice as it doesn't make sense and going with a video off YouTube. The latest one was me asking how I can set up custom 404 error pages for php files as their own website states that their method doesn't work with php. The first response I got back was a very detailed explanation of how and what I needed to do, finished with the line "this doesn't work for .php files" which is what my original question was! Then the second response I got was just simply a link to wiki page outside of 1&1 telling me how to do it. Very strange if you ask me. The reason I ask is I've just read another thread on here where someone said 1&1 is a bit of a dirty word, and to be honest I'm not really that clued up on service providers. So what is so bad about them, or is it just that their customer support teams don't appear to know what they're talking about?

Thought I'd update this. I went with WordPress and have integrated it into my site. I used the Toolbox theme as it has minimal styling on it and have almost got it to where I want it to be. But it's all up and running now anyway.

I've just had this very same problem. I've just integrated a WordPress blog into an existing site and was lost when trying to redesign it. I have very basic knowledge of coding and have self taught using tutorials on YouTube etc, but I went with the Toolbox theme for my WordPress blog as it is stripped bare.I've almost got it looking identical to the rest of the site (still needs some tweaking) and as I said, I'm no pro at this!

Hmmm. I only have one database available on my current hosting package which is in use, is it possible to install WordPress on the same database I'm already using but in a different table or do I need to get more database's? I'm guessing more database's but want to be sure before I upgrade the package and I can't seem to find a definitive answer.

Not sure if this is in the right section, so if it is wrong I apologise. I couldn't find anything similar. Basically my website http://www.uksecurity-directory.co.uk is at the stage now where I need to start populating it with current news and articles. I'm unsure of the right direction to take. The end result I want is a load of article pages constantly updated and an RSS feed posting out to subscribers. My first thought is to just add a blog section and install WordPress on the site and then just write out my news articles etc, as and when required. But I'm wondering if this the best method for my type of site, or should I manually get the database set up and do it that way using php etc. Obviously I require the articles to have the same look and feel of the rest of the website which would be difficult with WordPress (I think?) so it seems easier to just insert the relevant php into website template and learn all of that. Is it even feasible for someone new to php and databases to set something like this up or is it way over my head. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well I got the desired effect I wanted and thanks to some hints over at stackoverflow and the tutorials that Jay linked. This is what I used. I added the following into my Javascript coding that I already had in place for the validation. $(document).ready(function() { $('.listing').change(function(){ if ($(this).val() == 'Bronze') { $('#Description').attr('readonly','readonly'); } else { $('#Description').removeAttr('readonly'); } }); }); This didn't exactly work at first because my Bronze radio button is set to be the default with the attribute checked. What was happening was that when the page opened Bronze is selected by default but I was still able to input into the text box, unless I selected Silver, then re-selected Bronze again. I added the attribute readonly="readonly" to the text box and this has made it read only to start with until Silver is selected. All works perfectly!!

OK all sorted.I actually changed the position of the image first as I didn't like the initial layout and it's fixed itself, which is a bonus!! Thanks for the input.

Guy's, I've just inserted an image into my webpage and for some reason it won't link to the relevant domain. Hovering over it with the mouse does nothing. I can't think of or see any reason why it won't link, and I'm hoping it's just my computer or, more than likely, something really stupid I've missed, but could someone please take a quick look for me. The website is http://www.uksecurity-directory.co.uk and the image is the black ESS logo on the right side of the page. On the view source page it's line 146 of code. If it is something really dumb that I've done then I apologise now. I've been on the go for 27 hours now and am a self taught beginner, but I just can't see what the problem is. Many thanks.

Guy's. more help is needed on my site. I'm sure there is probably the answer already on here and is almost certainly on Google but I am having no joy in finding it or the examples I have found don't explain the specifics enough and are a little confusing. I have this contact form on this site http://www.uksecurity-directory.co.uk/addyourcompany.html The from works perfectly well and I get all the information but clients are getting a little confused when selecting regions. They should be selecting either UK Wide OR selecting individual regions but I'm getting people selecting almost everything. What I'm trying to achieve is making it so that if you select UK Wide, the rest of the region check boxes are greyed out/ un-selectable. But if they don't select UK Wide they still need to be able to select multiple regions. Am I right in thinking this needs to be done in JS? I also want the text box lower down the page to only be available to type in if Silver is selected from the radio buttons. As with all my previous requests for help, I'm not expecting someone to just do the work for me, although it would be handy , but if you know of a good place to learn this type of coding, It would be appreciated. As always, I thank you for your time.
