I once had myself coded a live twitter feed on my site. You have to dig into Facebook API and see if they provide a way to access the data. If they have some sort of XML or JSON interface than you're cool as long as you know your way around PHP and Javascript. If they don't, however, you can always resort to screen scrapping your own facebook page, however that's a bit more advanced.

If you're gonna have index.php in the directory it will be set as landing page by default, however, if you have both index.html and index.php in the same dir - by default index.html will be prioritized. And by the way, by default neither of the files will be seen in a browser's url field from a user's point of view, for example, if user enters www.yourdomain.com and your home page is index.htm/html/php, user will only see www.yourdomain.com unless he goes to another page that is not index.

From a professional's point of view, index.php will not look more professional, it will just say that the website is most likely dynamic and not static. However, for example my website's landing file is(was) index.html, but the very website works as a massive ajax application which is way more complex than your usual index.php routine.

If I understand the problem, it's quite simple. You put the Javascript code into a separate filename.js file without <script> tags and then add the line somewhere between <head></head> tags:

    <script src="filename.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
