  1. Hi guys I am new to offering web design and do not have a general idea of pricing. I have been approached by a company who would like to hire me to help them set up an ebay shop. It will include taking images of al their stock so it looks professional (catalogue quality) editing them and including their logos on them. There are around 1000-1500 approx items which I will need to catalogue inidvidually and edit them in PS. I have no idea on what sort of price to quote and do understand it will be time consuming. So my question is guys if I asked you to take 1000 -1500 pictures and edit them how much would you charge? Thank you.
  2. Thanks for the advice. The client is local so I think I will meet them and help them sign up for a domain name etc and once the website is complete I can upload it with them. Great advice, Thanks!
  3. Hello everyone, I am not a pro at wed design but I have made a start. I have just landed my first job, Hooray! Thing is I do not know how to go about it. The customer wants a simple portfolio website and I have a design up and running. HOw do I actually go about publishing it? I mean would I register the hosting on the customers details or my own? Do you guys have your own hosting and publish it to there and direct a domain to it? Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks!
  4. Funny you talk about pulling in content from other sites as thats the kind of road i'm looking to go down with my website. I do know that wordpress uses php as its platform so i'll certainly look in to that. Also found out Twitter is built using rubyonrails so there's another lead. Time to get working!
  5. So I have been designing websites for a few years now. Though not very advanced websites I have created a fair few to get the hang of design and layout. I use basic HTML and make my website designs in Photoshop and use Dreamweaver for editing. Now I want to take it to another level. I havn't really had much coding in my websites as they have been portfolio websites for small businesses. I would like to know where to start of and how you would create content rich and interactive websites and begin to code them personally. Currently I use freely available scripts for contact forms etc. When I mean content rich I refer to sites such as Twitter, Facebook etc. I have a idea which I would like to put in to play and from previous experience know that algorithms will be a must. So any pointers to good resources or even which language/script to look in to. The journey will be long but one which I would love to do! Thanks!
  6. Hello, I tried that and it comes up with "500 Internal Server Error". Do you know why the domain resolves to the full path and shows it anyway? Thanks
  7. Hello everyone, I currently have a domain registered with a company and using hosting with another. The problem is when I go to my website it shows the full path. e.g. www.mywebsite.co.uk will resolve to: http://72.42.15.191/~usr/folder/ the ~refers to my hosting username. My main website is listed in a subfolder and has a index.php. the /folder/ listed above is my sub directory in public_html. I believe it has something to do with .htaccess and mod re-writes. At the moment I am using this as a re-write to point the domain to my sub directory. My question is how would I hide the full path so it will only show: www.mywebsite.co.uk/LINK_USER_ClICKS_ON. My current script is: # Do not change this line. RewriteEngine on # Change yourdomain.com to be your primary domain. RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?mywebsite$ # Change 'subfolder' to be the folder you will use for your primary domain. RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/SUBFOLDER/ # Don't change this line. RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d # Change 'subfolder' to be the folder you will use for your primary domain. RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /SUBFOLDER/$1 # Change yourdomain.com to be your primary domain again. # Change 'subfolder' to be the folder you will use for your primary domain # followed by / then the main file for your site, index.php, index.html, etc. RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www.)?mywebsite$ RewriteRule ^(/)?$ SUBFOLDER/index.php [L] Thanks
  8. Thanks for the reply, I think I will make a tree diagram to list out all the variables to make it easier. It won't be customisable as such because the possible combination of variables will be pre-defined. For example: Variable1 Variable2 Variable3 (if variable 1+2 have sub variable) Variable 4 (if variable 1+2+3 have sub variable) Ford Fiesta Zetec Zetec S Lamborghini Reventon NONE For the Ford variable as there are more models for that make as you select them their corrosponding details will appear. Once you have concluded the maximum variables ie reached Zetec S then all the information about that model will appear. For the lambhorgini there are only two variables and once "reventon" is selected then the information for that model would appear.
  9. Before I move on to my main project I want to have a play around and practice with some basic stuff. I know how to create templates and edit basic HTML and what the tags are. What I want to do is create a simple website. On the website there will be a drop down menu which will contain variable X. They will select an option and it will then bring up another drop down menu with a set of y options corresponding to the selection of X. They will then pick the relevant option from this menu and once they do it will display some information at the bottom regarding there combination. For example if X = ferrari Y = 360 then the result will be a display of specs for that car. If anyone can shed some light on how to do this it will be great! Thanks.
  10. I have worked on php before so it would be my first choice. Though in your sig you mention Ruby is greater than php what reasons would you state for this?
  11. Thanks for the replies, web-itec I have not decided whether to take payments or just rely on advertising for revenue. If I do take payments where can I read about the laws involved? Mike would it be possible for me to view your project just to get an insight in to different ideas. Thanks again.
  12. Hello everyone, I am on my journey to plan, design and implement a website similar in function to autotrader.co.uk. I was wondering if anyone has an idea of a generic breakdown of how it works and what it is coded in. I understand that MYSQL knowledge will be a must in this project. Any advice or help will be much appreciated. Thanks.
  13. Thanks Lev, just seen some of your work it is very nice!
  14. Hello everyone. Hope everyone is ok. I'm Simon from England and I'm here to learn more about web dev. I have previous knowledge of HTML but not in detail. I want to create a website like autotrader.co.uk. Although it won't be to do with cars.
