The Effects Of Changing a Sucessful SEO Site.
Thanks for the reply, I was going to approach it slowly as you so rightly said, but the site I have in mind to implement is a completely different site in comparison, that's why I was a little unsure. Also, I'm not sure it's the backlink profile that's making the site do so well, more the search term it's under and it's listing. But thanks for the advice, I may get back to you with a pm later on, but thanks for the reply.

The Effects Of Changing a Sucessful SEO Site.
Hey guys, I just recently bought a website, and this website is currently number two for it's search term, so has around anywhere from 5,000 - 10,000 views per month. I was planning on totally re-vamping the site, but can I ask what precautions I need to take (if any) when updating the site, to not negatively effect the ranking? For example should I keep the head section intact as to not effect the keywords? Also can I ask if adding an extra key word will negatively effect the SEO? I do understand this kind of thing to a certain extent, but have never been in the position of altering an already successful website, so I'm a little confused. Hopefully you guys may have similar experiences. Thanks for any advice.

A few questions
If a search engine punishes your site by lowering its listing (or removing it from the index entirely), that's a penalty, yes. But just because a site isn't ranking well it's not necessarily been given a penalty. I'm not sure how they work in all honesty, but if it's received one already, I'd guess that the site owner is contacted to notify them as such. But quite possible it's already received one with that amount of keyword stuffing involved. But I can't say. You did say there's no ranking whatsoever so this may seem quite likely. With good SEO you should find your page on Google, without or without submitting it within a few days, depending on the content of course.

A few questions
Your right in thinking you use the H1 tags for the most important parts, as they are given more relevance / weight by search engines. But using a few select keywords in your H1tags as titles would be suffice. Then You should use <p>this is for your normal text</p> for your main text, not the Htags - Reserve them for Titles, headings and sub-headings. Ahh I see, understandable. I would recommend notifying him of this, before he gets penalized for using such methods.

A few questions
Hi there, I kind of new at this aswell, but I can try and answer some of the questions for you: I believe this to be wrong. H1 tags should ideally be used for your title, H2 for sub-titles and so on. Read more about the proper structure here http://www.netmechanic.com/news/vol4/html_no9.htm This is not o.k, this is known as 'Keyword Stuffing'. It's a 'blackhat' method of trying to gain more traffic. And a pretty poor one at that. I believe penalties / warnings will be given if a search engine finds you using this technique. This is pointless. They are yet again just trying to stuff as many keywords as possible. Overall the people asking you to do this are trying to use very frond-upon methods of web development. And they're very bad at it. I'm not sure about the 301 direct, never done one before If I'm honest. But I'm sure someone on here will be able to help you. But literally typing '301 redirect tutorial' into Google will give you the answer in seconds. But judging by the sound of the site owner, it wouldn't surprise me if it's something dodgy they're asking you to do with that re-direct.

IE CSS Issue...as always.
Sorry to bump this, fixed a few of the bugs, but does anyone know why this doesn't work with position:absolute as apposed to position:relative ? I've done it to stop the drop down pushing relative content down due to the padding of the css. But now on a rollover it only displays one item in the drop down list? Any idea how to sort this out while I'm at it? #nav_drop{list-style:none; font-size:11px; left:804px; line-height:2em; position:absolute; top:29px; z-index:500; width:100px} #nav_drop li{ float:left; z-index:500; position:absolute;} #nav_drop a{display:block; line-height:2em; text-decoration:none} #nav_drop ul {float: none;left: -10px;list-style: none outside none;position: absolute;z-index: 500;display: none} #nav_drop:hover ul {display: block} #nav_drop li:hover ul{float:none; left:-10px} #nav_drop li:hover ul li a:hover{background:#2d2d2d} #nav_drop li ul li a{background:#000; width:152px; padding-top:5px; padding-left:10px; padding-bottom:5px} .blue a{color:#fff} .blue2 a{color:#fff; padding-bottom:27px} .m_links a{color:#fff; padding-bottom:10px; border-bottom:dotted; border-bottom-width:thin; border-collapse:collapse} .last a{color:#dadabb; border:none} There's the CSS, it's the padding of the class's that's causing the issue, but you can see I've changed the #nav_drop & #nav_drop li to position:absolute; . But it's only displaying the first item in the list? See the effect here: [link removed]

Just something I read the other day and found it quite useful Thanks again.

IE CSS Issue...as always.
Thanks for the replys, @zed - just tried it with the added a; but didn't work, but I forgot to post the second part of the code, apologies: <ul id="nav_drop"> <li><span class="blue2"><a href="#">Control Pannel</a></span> <ul> <li class="m_links" ><a href="#">Upload Artwork</a></li> <li class="m_links" ><a href="#">Upload Artwork</a></li> <li class="m_links"><a href="#">Submit Brief</a></li> <li class="m_links" ><a href="#">Upload Artwork</a></li> <li class="m_links"><a href="#">Submit Brief</a></li> <li class="m_links"><a href="#">Submit Brief</a></li> <li class="last"><a href="#">Competition details</a></li> </ul> </li> @ Pedro - Thanks for the fix but surely there's a way of fixing this without JavaScript? I'm sure it's just me doing something wrong with the css. I've seen plenty of these using css alone, that's what I was going for. I'm using IE7, so either way I think there's something I'm missing. Appreciate the effort (:

IE CSS Issue...as always.
Hey guys, a small CSS issue here. It's a very simple CSS dropdown menu, but as always, IE has problems with it Wondered if any of you guys could tell what part of these few lines of CSS IE's having trouble with? #nav_drop{list-style:none; font-size:11px; left:804px; line-height:2em; position:relative; top:29px; z-index:500; width:100px} #nav_drop li{ float:left; z-index:500; position:relative} #nav_drop a{display:block; line-height:2em; text-decoration:none} #nav_drop ul{float:none; position:absolute; left:-999em; list-style:none; background-color:#fff; z-index:500;} #nav_drop li:hover ul{float:none; left:-10px} #nav_drop li:hover ul li a:hover{background:#2d2d2d} #nav_drop li ul li a{background:#000; width:152px; padding-top:5px; padding-left:10px; padding-bottom:5px} All other browsers its working fine, but in IE the hover doesn't work [when you hover over it it does nothing] and the relative elements seem to be pushing other things on my page down. Really don't know why it would do this, but thanks for any help. Pippin.

MYSQL glitching with paragraphs?
Hey guys, I didn't want to bump this thread but seeing as a few people have replied I'll just inform you that the problem has been resolved. It was infact a MYSQL error. I still don't understand what was wrong exactly, but when it outputted a certain paragraph [it literally was just one paragraph it didn't like] it would always glitch. Works fine with everything else. But thanks for all the input sorry I can't be more informative to what would fix the problem if anyone else comes across this error though. +1's for you all (:

How do i add an upload feature to my website
Firstly yes this is the right place, as and upload using PHP is probably the way to go Uploads are really simple, but your right, can cause a bit of a security issue as your letting anyone upload to your server. Thus creating a possible security risk. All that said they can be relatively safe with the right validation, see here for an example of one I've just looked up for you. This includes not only file checking, but uses black listed words to stop injections and what not. I believe this is just the security part to the form, but just search around for 'secure php upload script' or something along those lines and your bound to come across something. hope this helps

MYSQL glitching with paragraphs?
No no, it's just being called by the AJAX and displaying straight to a DIV. By unstable I mean that, I have a button to display the data. Once the buttons is clicked it it runs a php function which displays an image and then displays the quotes on-top of that image. But when the large data is in the DB it will just randomly go back to before the first click. [show no quotes of image]. It's kinda hard to explain but in all honesty it could be the php causing the error, but I just thought seeing as it worked with small data and not larger data I figured it was the MYSQL glitching? If nothing seems wrong here I'll check my php and post back either with a fix or more info.

MYSQL glitching with paragraphs?
Hey guys, I'm randomly displaying some information from a datasbase, and it works fine with small data, but when I try and insert say a paragraph, it becomes really glitchy? I'll give you an example: say if I have this: row 1 : "hello" row 2: "world" row 3: "hello again" It will cycle through these at random just fine. But say if I have something like the following in all my three rows: row 1: <p class="gen_text"><u>Heroes plaza</u> <br><br> It must once have been a region of colossal statues, shattered limbs scatter all around this place, half buried in the surrounding vegetation, some barely visible as they as weighed down by the thick peat which surrounds them. The golden sunlight illuminating the entire collection of shattered remains, casting cool and tranquil shadows against the grass. An ivory white plaza visible though an archway, formed by a half broken torso which seemed to once belong to the stature of an Adonis like figure. The beautifully lit promenade led to a magnificent fountain of great stature, the fountain was unlike the other statues which were randomly dotted the hills nearby, it was clean, well managed and seemed to be the focal point of the courtyard, still flowing with the clearest water imaginable. Colorful flowers bunch together in random places, trees with intertwined branches; arching majestically towards the sky and gently drooping towards the earth in graceful swathes, a scene of green, gold and saffron. <br><br>Brief: Using the short descriptive paragraph above, design a concept for the enviroment or interesting part of the scene. <br>Author : David Gavinson | Reference Number : 0004</p> <a href="#" id="opt_dl"></a> <a href="#" id="opt_vw"></a> row 2: It must once have been a region of colossal statues... etc... It becomes very unstable. I'm using type 'text' for this, which is why I can't see why there'd be a problem with me inserting a paragraph? Any of you guys know what would cause this? I was thinking maybe it was just crashing the MYSQL...but there's only three bits of data...surely that's not enough to overload it? Anyway if you guys have any clue any help would be appreciated (: Pippin. ps the line I'm using for a random peice of data is below, just incase I'm doing something wrong there? $qry = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM env ORDER BY RAND() LIMIT 1") or die (json_encode('Query error'));

JS call within AJAX function
Cheers Andyl, worked as allways. didn't know you could just include them in the code like that, cheers. But the function was just because I used to have it as an onclick, only reason Pippin.

JS call within AJAX function
Yeah, the onclick I had before no longer works now I have the AJAX involved, so I was wondering how to maybe do it in the function? Maybe this was the wrong way to go about doing it, I'm not too sure. But yes, just a simple popup window on click is what I'm after A popup window aswell as the origional function I may add.

JS call within AJAX function
Hey guys, been searching for this but it's all a bit hazy and very specific to what other people were after. Just wondered if someone knew how to run a JavaScript function within an AJAX function? I'll post both my AJAX and JS and if anyone could just show me how to do this it'd be great. It's Just a little test document [hence, www.google.com] but can't seem to fire the JS when the AJAX is called. AJAX $(document).ready(function(){ $('#xavisys-logo').live('click', function(e) { var r1=''; var r2=''; e.preventDefault(); $.get("char_con.php?", {act: 'char_con'}, function(data){ r1=data; }); $.getJSON("generator.php?", {act: 'char_con', bc: '1'}, function(data){ r2=data; $(".quote").html( r1 + r2 ); }); }); }); JavaScript function myinfo() { window.open ( "http://www.google.com/" ) } Any help appreciated Pippin.

Call a PHP act with AJAX issue
Hey guys I'm trying to use AJAX for the first time, could anyone help me out with the following code? I'm trying to get the act of the file, but don't really know how it's done, here's the code I have so far, and I'll post what my pages / functions are called at the bottom so people can see if I'm going about it the right way, Thanks for any help. // Set path to PHP script var phpscript = 'cahr_con.php'; function createRequestObject() { var req; if(window.XMLHttpRequest){ // Firefox, Safari, Opera... req = new XMLHttpRequest(); } else if(window.ActiveXObject) { // Internet Explorer 5+ req = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } else { // There is an error creating the object, // just as an old browser is being used. alert('There was a problem creating the XMLHttpRequest object'); } return req; } // Make the XMLHttpRequest object var http = createRequestObject(); function sendRequestGet(act) { // Open PHP script for requests http.open('get', phpscript+'?act='+act); http.onreadystatechange = handleResponseGet; http.send(null); } } My PHP is held in an external file called : char_con.php And the function I'm trying to call looks like this : if($_GET['act'] == "char_con") Also would a link to make AJAX call the php look something like: onclick="sendRequestGet('act');" ? Thanks for any help on this, never used it before so kind of just messing and hoping for the best. Appreciate any help.

Detecting Netscape [All versions]
Yeah I read somewhere that the user base had fallen from 5% to about 1%, but litterally all it needs is an alter of a z-index or two, then it would work fine, if it were anything major I wouldn't bother. But thanks for the links, more helpful that what I could fine. Thanks BlueDreamer, appreciate it. +1

Detecting Netscape [All versions]
Hey guys, anyone got any idea how to detect Netscape with an If like you would IE: <!--[if IE]> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="iehacks.css" /> <![endif]--> I've found a lot on excluding a css file from Netscape ver.4 for example, and some odd bits of JavaScript, but is there an easy way to detect it like the above statment? I can't find one anywhere. Thanks for any help

And as cibgraphics said in the other thread, it will just p*** people off.
