  1. Thanks for the reply, I was going to approach it slowly as you so rightly said, but the site I have in mind to implement is a completely different site in comparison, that's why I was a little unsure. Also, I'm not sure it's the backlink profile that's making the site do so well, more the search term it's under and it's listing. But thanks for the advice, I may get back to you with a pm later on, but thanks for the reply.
  2. Hey guys, I just recently bought a website, and this website is currently number two for it's search term, so has around anywhere from 5,000 - 10,000 views per month. I was planning on totally re-vamping the site, but can I ask what precautions I need to take (if any) when updating the site, to not negatively effect the ranking? For example should I keep the head section intact as to not effect the keywords? Also can I ask if adding an extra key word will negatively effect the SEO? I do understand this kind of thing to a certain extent, but have never been in the position of altering an already successful website, so I'm a little confused. Hopefully you guys may have similar experiences. Thanks for any advice.

If a search engine punishes your site by lowering its listing (or removing it from the index entirely), that's a penalty, yes. But just because a site isn't ranking well it's not necessarily been given a penalty. I'm not sure how they work in all honesty, but if it's received one already, I'd guess that the site owner is contacted to notify them as such. But quite possible it's already received one with that amount of keyword stuffing involved. But I can't say. You did say there's no ranking whatsoever so this may seem quite likely. With good SEO you should find your page on Google, without or without submitting it within a few days, depending on the content of course.

Your right in thinking you use the H1 tags for the most important parts, as they are given more relevance / weight by search engines. But using a few select keywords in your H1tags as titles would be suffice. Then You should use <p>this is for your normal text</p> for your main text, not the Htags - Reserve them for Titles, headings and sub-headings. Ahh I see, understandable. I would recommend notifying him of this, before he gets penalized for using such methods.

Hi there, I kind of new at this aswell, but I can try and answer some of the questions for you: I believe this to be wrong. H1 tags should ideally be used for your title, H2 for sub-titles and so on. Read more about the proper structure here http://www.netmechanic.com/news/vol4/html_no9.htm This is not o.k, this is known as 'Keyword Stuffing'. It's a 'blackhat' method of trying to gain more traffic. And a pretty poor one at that. I believe penalties / warnings will be given if a search engine finds you using this technique. This is pointless. They are yet again just trying to stuff as many keywords as possible. Overall the people asking you to do this are trying to use very frond-upon methods of web development. And they're very bad at it. I'm not sure about the 301 direct, never done one before If I'm honest. But I'm sure someone on here will be able to help you. But literally typing '301 redirect tutorial' into Google will give you the answer in seconds. But judging by the sound of the site owner, it wouldn't surprise me if it's something dodgy they're asking you to do with that re-direct.
  8. Sorry to bump this, fixed a few of the bugs, but does anyone know why this doesn't work with position:absolute as apposed to position:relative ? I've done it to stop the drop down pushing relative content down due to the padding of the css. But now on a rollover it only displays one item in the drop down list? Any idea how to sort this out while I'm at it? #nav_drop{list-style:none; font-size:11px; left:804px; line-height:2em; position:absolute; top:29px; z-index:500; width:100px} #nav_drop li{ float:left; z-index:500; position:absolute;} #nav_drop a{display:block; line-height:2em; text-decoration:none} #nav_drop ul {float: none;left: -10px;list-style: none outside none;position: absolute;z-index: 500;display: none} #nav_drop:hover ul {display: block} #nav_drop li:hover ul{float:none; left:-10px} #nav_drop li:hover ul li a:hover{background:#2d2d2d} #nav_drop li ul li a{background:#000; width:152px; padding-top:5px; padding-left:10px; padding-bottom:5px} .blue a{color:#fff} .blue2 a{color:#fff; padding-bottom:27px} .m_links a{color:#fff; padding-bottom:10px; border-bottom:dotted; border-bottom-width:thin; border-collapse:collapse} .last a{color:#dadabb; border:none} There's the CSS, it's the padding of the class's that's causing the issue, but you can see I've changed the #nav_drop & #nav_drop li to position:absolute; . But it's only displaying the first item in the list? See the effect here: [link removed]

  12. Hey thanks yeah that's worked, It's still a little glitchy but I should be able to straighten those out Thanks Pedro +1's for your efforts (: Edit // Just so you know, If you have IE8 , you can go to Tools > Developer Tools and select IE7 for rendering method. Just something I read the other day and found it quite useful Thanks again.
  13. Yeah sure, Just uploaded the basic parts for you to see: [link removed] If you try it in FF or Opera, you'll see how it's meant to act.
  14. Thanks for the replys, @zed - just tried it with the added a; but didn't work, but I forgot to post the second part of the code, apologies: <ul id="nav_drop"> <li><span class="blue2"><a href="#">Control Pannel</a></span> <ul> <li class="m_links" ><a href="#">Upload Artwork</a></li> <li class="m_links" ><a href="#">Upload Artwork</a></li> <li class="m_links"><a href="#">Submit Brief</a></li> <li class="m_links" ><a href="#">Upload Artwork</a></li> <li class="m_links"><a href="#">Submit Brief</a></li> <li class="m_links"><a href="#">Submit Brief</a></li> <li class="last"><a href="#">Competition details</a></li> </ul> </li> @ Pedro - Thanks for the fix but surely there's a way of fixing this without JavaScript? I'm sure it's just me doing something wrong with the css. I've seen plenty of these using css alone, that's what I was going for. I'm using IE7, so either way I think there's something I'm missing. Appreciate the effort (:
  15. Hey guys, a small CSS issue here. It's a very simple CSS dropdown menu, but as always, IE has problems with it Wondered if any of you guys could tell what part of these few lines of CSS IE's having trouble with? #nav_drop{list-style:none; font-size:11px; left:804px; line-height:2em; position:relative; top:29px; z-index:500; width:100px} #nav_drop li{ float:left; z-index:500; position:relative} #nav_drop a{display:block; line-height:2em; text-decoration:none} #nav_drop ul{float:none; position:absolute; left:-999em; list-style:none; background-color:#fff; z-index:500;} #nav_drop li:hover ul{float:none; left:-10px} #nav_drop li:hover ul li a:hover{background:#2d2d2d} #nav_drop li ul li a{background:#000; width:152px; padding-top:5px; padding-left:10px; padding-bottom:5px} All other browsers its working fine, but in IE the hover doesn't work [when you hover over it it does nothing] and the relative elements seem to be pushing other things on my page down. Really don't know why it would do this, but thanks for any help. Pippin.

  18. Hey guys, I didn't want to bump this thread but seeing as a few people have replied I'll just inform you that the problem has been resolved. It was infact a MYSQL error. I still don't understand what was wrong exactly, but when it outputted a certain paragraph [it literally was just one paragraph it didn't like] it would always glitch. Works fine with everything else. But thanks for all the input sorry I can't be more informative to what would fix the problem if anyone else comes across this error though. +1's for you all (:
  19. Let Steve help you, he helped me with this a while back, and he really knows what he's talking about. He'll get you sorted out in a jiffy Hope it all goes well for you RobbieD90!
  20. posted twice. My mistake
  21. Firstly yes this is the right place, as and upload using PHP is probably the way to go Uploads are really simple, but your right, can cause a bit of a security issue as your letting anyone upload to your server. Thus creating a possible security risk. All that said they can be relatively safe with the right validation, see here for an example of one I've just looked up for you. This includes not only file checking, but uses black listed words to stop injections and what not. I believe this is just the security part to the form, but just search around for 'secure php upload script' or something along those lines and your bound to come across something. hope this helps
