  1. Moving the files aren't really a problem mate. I have Shell access so it only takes a few minutes per site. The problem comes with the differing server configuration, and sites not working correctly on the new server. It seems the overwhelming opinion is too take it on the chin, that's fine just wanted to see that I was acting in the standard industry manner and not ripping myself off. Thanks for the advice all.
  2. Hi Mate, what part of South Wales are you based. I'm in Cardiff hence the username.
  3. Looks like it's beans on toast next month then. I think maybe I'll just take it into consideration next time I charge a new customer hosting. I was looking at it from a Hosting company point of view. I was with Fasthosts years ago and they told me they'd be updating their software and that I'd need to check functionaity of my site, as that site worked fine I didn't need to change anything, but that was my first website about 10 years ago, I work on considerably more complicated ones now and they obviously have more scope for software conflict. Anyway thanks for the advice guys, just as well I never sent all those invoices out.
  4. Hi All My first post, but been a lurker for years. Over the years the amount of clients I have has grown and I supply all their Website needs from development to email/hosting. I had them all on a dedicated server, which we've had for about 4 years. Now is the time to update the server, not because we have any server issues but more to do with the fact that I'm concious that these things only have a certain shelf life and I'd say 4 years is more than enough. Basically I charge normal hosting prices to them (obviously dependant on which country as too what you class as normal). i.e. a static HTML site with about 20 pages will pay about £75-£100 per year, a smallish Ecommerce site I charge about £200 per year etc. I appreciate you can get this cheaper but obviously that requires the client to arrange for it themselves. My point is, now that I've spoken to my host and decided we need to swap servers (which they agreed) how do I go about charging my customers. I've started swapping a few sites over already and a few have had problems due to slightly different server configurations. I have around 50 customers and estimate to swap all of them and test etc I could be looking at around 2 or 3 weeks work. Basically could I say to the customer that their hosting is being decommissoned and that they need to move it and make a nominal charge of say £50 or am I just expected to take the hit? I have a few customers who have their own hosting arranged and I've been asked to move theres before, obviously I've charged them as I make no money for the hosting. Any ideas or advice please. Apologies for not explaining it very well.
