Hi,
I am having a hard time deciding what Server Scripting language(s) to learn. I have a reasonable understanding of HTML and CSS via a Dreamweaver course I've just completed. I've assumed rightly or wrongly I should learn Javascript next, which is what I am in the process of doing. I know that Dreamweaver makes light work of Javascript for things like rollovers, pop-ups, alerts etc... but I intend to learn and understand the Javascript syntax and the DOM, rather than just relying on Dreamweaver.
I need to find out what is the most lucrative and most in demand Server Scripting language for web development in the UK. Which language do I plough my time into? I have a full time job, and intend starting up a web design business on a part time basis, but I won't be able to do that for at least 2 years. So I want to use the two years before I set up my business to learn a Server Scripting language, as a back up plan in case I want to change my career, and obviously it will also be useful to learn incase certain websites that I design require it. I'll be learning via books and the internet tutorials available on line.
I have touched on PHP/MySQL for form processing using XAMPP to host, but I discovered that a lot of hosting companies only support PHP on Linux, or suggest that it's more ideal to use Linux to host a PHP script. The PHP I touched on was all done through Windows based Dreamweaver software, so what I also need to know is, if PHP is the scripting language or one of the scripting languages that I should be learning, should I be using a Linux OS and scripting software to do so? I have no experience of using Linux.
All the companies that I've worked for, past and present use Windows for the workplace PC's. It seems to me that ASP or ASP.NET is more for Windows web based software, rather than PHP, and that if Windows is the more favoured OS for UK Businesses, as opposed to Linux, then it would make sense that ASP or ASP.NET is more popular in the UK as a Server scripting language, but this is just a guess. Could someone please confirm if I've got the right end of the stick or not. I've got no idea of the popularity of web based software solutions or what is involved in web development, other than what scripting languages are available.
