Inline positioning doesn't have any effect.
Yes, sorry, the content will go in the middle. And yes, I am very much winging it at the minute. The gaffer is changing his mind so often that I can't put much planning into it and am needing to stay really flexible. I know this is probably going to lead to me having lots of really silly beginner questions (as I have already had to ask plenty as a result of this way of working) so I'm sorry to put you all through this, but I do really appreciate all the help I have had so far

Inline positioning doesn't have any effect.
Thanks Cibgraphics (and Lev, but I couldn't get yours to work.. ), Yeah I am planning to add content. To be honest just getting them side by side was as far as I thought ahead. I guess my answer would have been to mess about with padding and border, but thinking about it, things could get messy that way. What would you recommend?

Inline positioning doesn't have any effect.
Hi again all. My boss has decided to change his mind about what the site should look like, meaning starting again from scratch (I couldn't adapt the original code). The new layout need three links down the left and three down the right. I have got a <div> with three links in one list and three in another. However no matter how hard I try I cannot get them to display inline. I have also tried using top and left positioning to shunt the righthand link along, but they just stay in block. Any Ideas on how to fix this? the new site is up at www.thegaragestudios.co.cc The layout should look something like this, with L1-6 being the link boxes and the ....'s being blank space: [L1]...................[L4] [L2]...................[L5] [L3]...................[L6] Much appreciated, Al

Border-Bottom showing up at top instead
Hi again, have been progressing very well with my website thanks to the excellent help of people in this forum, I have just encountered a bit of a glitch. I have repositioned my link bar to make room for a banner, but for some reason it is now showing the bottom border on the top. Any ideas how to correct this? Cheers, Al

Javascript Marquee
Hya, I've been trying to get a marquee working for my site, and would like it to use an external file for the text that it scrolls. Currently nothing is showing up except for a little space where it should be that is only visible when I highlight the page by selecting edit>select all I have used the script avaliable here but instead of inserting the script into the body I have put it into an external .js my script is the same as theirs except I have made the links point to my documents instead of the samples they gave, however I will paste it here incase I have managed to delete one vital full stop or something. I'm guessing it's because I have incorrectly moved the code from inside the HTML to the external .js, but if someone could help me fix it that would be great. Cheers, Al

Image Link

CSS Center
My apologies, I missed the pinned thread. I followed the instructions and it's now looking fine and validating too...

CSS Center
Thanks, I have used it elsewhere on the page though. It was only throwing up the error in the one instance, so I presumed align was allowed in some places and not others. I have tried adding your code to the next <DIV> to use align, and at first it didn't seem to be centering at all, but changing the 900px results in different alignment of the placeholder text. 900px was perfect for the original problem, and to keep things lined up it should be perfect for the placeholder as well, so why is it not centering? How do I then recreate the left and right align used for the two seperate boxes? Something like "Left: 0px; right: auto;"? Again sorry for bombarding the forum with really basic and stupid questions, I should be nearly finished and I don't really do much web design, so I'll be out or your hair soon

CSS Center
Heya, apologies for double posting, but I had already asked this question in an older thread I had started. I'm guessing it's got lost among the newer posts.. My website is now up and running more or less how I want it to, design wise. I need to add the content, but the template is there and ready to use, as soon as my client provides content My problem is this.. I have used a strict DOCTYPE and understandably it's kicking up a fuss with regards to my use of HTML align tags when I try to validate it. I have used align="center" to position the navbar and the template text, and have not been able to get the same effect in CSS. I have tried using "left: auto; right: auto;" in different places, but it's not having any affect. Am I putting this in the wrong place (in which case where should it go) or am I using the wrong code entirely? Cheers, Al

Small aesthetic problems
Thanks everyone, I know I've probably been a pain, asking a load of really stupid questions so I really appreciate everyones responses. I started using DIV tags, and that solved a lot of my current problems, and even problems which I wasn't even going to attempt to tackle yet, so thanks for that Jennie.. I haven't put the "float" element in yet, but I will at some point to see if this makes the website behave more like how I'd like it to, however it's more or less how I want it at the moment, so I may not use this. One little problem though is that the site is no longer validating on W3C. It doesn't like my use of the align tag. I have used a strict doctype, as I know if I had used any other I would have just ended up getting frustrated and used tables in HTML. It seems obvious to me now that as align is a design element rather than content CSS is where it should be defined, but I'm a little gutted as it is behaving so perfectly by defining it in HTML, how can I achieve the same thing in CSS? Thanks again for your continued help, Alex

Small aesthetic problems
Oops, forgot the link... www.thegaragestudios.co.cc I guess looking att the code will help you confirm this, but there's no chance of the site suddenly going garbled like it is in dreamweaver then?

Small aesthetic problems
Hello, I have to apologise for my last postings, a great deal of the problems were due to invalid code, I had been working without an internet connection and so could only do so much to validate it. I have a couple of cosmetic problems with the website as it stands at the minute, but aside from that it's looking sorted for the navigation system. First, I have styled the navigation items using "border-bottom" tags to underline. There are gaps between the elements (presumably as it is applying a border to each item in the navigation bar individually and not the navigation as a whole) I would like this line to extend from left to right without any gaps. How do I achieve this? Second, the navigation looks more or less how I would like it to, and is rendering correctly in Safari and Firefox. It validates in both the HTML and CSS on W3C. However in Dreamweaver it is all garbled. The link bar is spread accross two lines, with the "Home" link next to the logo (after the padding) and the "Music Tuition" link on the next line. All other Navigation bar elements are bunched up on the right hand side of the page, spread accross two lines. I have included a screenshot. This isn't really a problem as long as it is showing up fine in the browser, but it is making it harder to see whats going on. I have a horrible sinking feeling that it's going to start rendering like this in the browser as well. Third, when resizing the browser window the link bar wraps onto the next line. Is there a way of stopping this, so that if the browser window is too small it makes the window scroll, rather than redesigning my website to fit? And finally, as the navigation is more or less dusted, I need to look at styling the content. I would like to have two columns underneath all the navigation, maybe one for images and one for information, or something similar. Is it positioning and layers that I need to look into? Thanks for your continued help, Alex

Spacing in lists
Ok, I'll have to get home and upload the site to the server.. I think the missing " and the html mispelling is just as I have copied out the text from one computer to another (by hand) I think it's correct on the actual website.. I'll post again once it's back online. Thanks, Al

Spacing in lists
Thanks, I had tried it with "p.navBar" instead of "li.navBar". I had thought the "p." told it to look for a class whichever tag it was inclosed in. Obviously by making it "li.navBar" it has told it the correct place to look, right? So what does the "p." mean? I have corrected that now but there is a gap beside both the "home" link and the "about" link. But none of the rest of the navigation items. By holding the mouse over the home link in dreamweaver I can see the padding that has just been added. This padding isn't present on the about link. I would guess therefore that the padding and navBar class (now called indent) is working correctly and it's something else thats wrong. My design computer is not connected to the internet (I am posting from the office computer) so I cannot upload the site for you to see but the HTML and CSS is as follows: HTML <ul id="mainNav"> <li><img src="Images/logo.png" alt="The Garage Studios" width="150" height="130" class=logoImg></li> <li class=indent"> <a href="index.thml">Home</a></li> <li><a href="about.html">About</a></li> ... ... </ul></p> CSS ul#mainNav li { display: inline; list-style: none; position: relative; top: 10px; left:10px; } li.indent { margin-left: 40px; } The logoImg class mentioned in the HTML section is commented out at the minute as I am not using it right now. And the logo will be resized in Photoshop, it's just subject to change so in the meantime I will keep the HTML resize and update it with the correct size version once it's finalized..

Spacing in lists
Hello, I managed to get my navigation system up and running more or less how I'd like it to by making a an inline list as I was reccomended earlier. I have a logo as the first item in the list and then some links. If [] represents a picture and _ _ _ represent links the website looks like this: []_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I would like it to have a gap (represented by full stops) between the picture and the links, as follows: []............ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ I have tried messing around with padding but it seems to affect all links. I have also tried giving just the image section it's own class (in the <li> tag, <li class="menuImg">) but it was coming out all garbled. Should the image be outside of the list? If so I am having trouble lining it up with the text. Also, the bottom of the type in the logo does not line up with the bottom of the type in the links. Can I fix this in CSS or do I have to open the image up in Photoshop and resize it to line up there? If you want to check my code the website is temporarily at www.thegaragestudios.co.cc It's rendering correctly in Safari, but Firefox is showing my old style without the inline list. I think it's a cache thing, but if you see a vertical menu rather than a horizontal one I'll need to look and see why the correct version isn't online.. <EDIT> firefox is now showing the inline horizontal menu, so it was the cache..</> Cheers, Al

Some basic questions before I get started on my website..
Thankyou, I'll take a look at it a little later when I'm at work.. W3C are showing no validation errors, it just would have been nice to be able to do it in Dreamweaver. Nevermind eh!

Some basic questions before I get started on my website..
Thanks, both of you it's been a great help.. I think I may have to do links the traditional way then.. I have never encountered PHP before and it requires hosting that provides PHP (am I right?). I am not sure what my client is willing to spring for with hosting, and the less requirements I can impose on him the better. Also my head will be swimming with CSS by the time I finish and the less I can complicate this the better. Maybe I'll upgrade it with PHP in the future. And with regards to the jquery, am I right in thinking I can make the whole website and then look into this if the client is adamant about bells and whistles once the site is complete? I mean, deciding whether or not to use PHP is something which affects the whole creation of the site from (nearly) the earliest point of creation, whereas the site will be functional with or without jquery... Two little things have come up since posting earlier.. If I want to have a horizontal link bar at the top is it correct to type the links vertically like so: Home Pictures Links and then position them using CSS (some sort of wrapping?)or just as a list on one line: Home Pictures Links and position them with fixed/relative positioning? And finally, trying to validate the site in Dreamweaver is throwing up errors with regards to the use of quotes on the style sheet. Is Dreamweaver only capable of validating HTML or do I need to inform it that the page is CSS somehow? Was I right to add to this post or should I have started a new post for this problem? Cheers

Some basic questions before I get started on my website..
Ok, I have to admit I am very much a beginner.. I have done partial CSS sites before, using HTML tables and CSS styles. I have been asked to do a website for somebody, and would like to do it properly if I am capable. However, before I even get started I have a couple of questions about a couple of basics.. First, I can remember in the past using Tables and possibly using (it's been a while) TR and TD tags to define styles. I am aware this is not really the correct way to do it. I can remember thinking at the time that it was a silly way to do it, and I thought at the time that it would be nice to be able to define my own tags, so that theoretically if I wanted to I could have 100 boxes, each with a different background colour and text styles (don't worry I don't actually want to do that!) Am I right in thinking that this is what classes are for; user definable tags? Second, I can remember being impressed at how easily site-wide changes can be made. I am wondering if it is possible to do this with navigation. For example, Instead of using the HREF tag in HTML can I define this in CSS? Specifically I would like to have something that defines a certain bit of text as home, links etc and have the CSS handle where that link points. In this way I only have to update the link location in one place (the style sheet) if the name of an html file changes. Third, I was pointed to a Flash website as an example of what my client would like. It's not anything that can't (and arguably shouldn't) be done in HTML, but there are a couple of nice transitions that I have a feeling my client is a little smitten with. I am aware that there are some very advanced things that can be done with CSS, and was wondering if dynamics is something that can be done. Something like a wipe or fade in transition. Is this sort of thing possible in CSS, and if so is it incredibly complex to do? Many thanks, Alex

Hello
Hello there, Just a little introduction before I start asking questions I have background in design but am currently working in music, although I have been asked to do a website for the company I work for. To this end, as my CSS is severly lacking I have registered at your forums. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Alex
