I've just upgraded to CS3, and I had a problem with a Word file yesterday - the images were missing in the pdf. Eskymo, I hate to ask, but do you think you could do me a huge favour? Can I mail you the ai file, and ask you to PDF it for me? They want 3mm bleeds, and crop marks.

I felt sure your 'specify the bleed dimensions' bit was the answer, but no. I'll keep trying, but since I have to mail this to the printers tonight, it looks like I may have to send the eps file. Ho hum.

It's not web-related, I know, but I'm hoping someone can help... First, you have to understand that if someone asks if I can do such and such, I always say 'Yes'. Then I Google for it... Well, this time I've gone and done it. I'm in over my head, and really need help with a business card that I've put together in Adobe Illustrator. The printers keep returning my pdf because it's not showing crop and bleed marks. Now, I know how to do that - you just put ticks in the right boxes in Acrobat. But my file shows neither, and I'm tearing my hair out going through all the settings to see what's amiss. I've attached two files - what the printers want (printer.pdf) and what Acrobat keeps giving me. The file that they sent me (printer.pdf) is my original file which they amended, but since then the information on the business card has changed, so I need to resave. Of course I could just send the eps file to the printers so that they can do what they like with it, but I'm too proud to admit defeat. Besides, I want to know where I'm going wrong. Does all this make sense? And can anyone guide me gently through the process? Marie printers.pdf test.pdf

Interesting question, interesting responses. I usually ask clients to send me links to three or four websites that they like, and to tell me why they like them, what aspects appeal to them and so on. This way I get a feel for the feel for their preferences which they often find difficult to articulate. (I have a lot of inarticulate clients...) I recently completed this: http://www.angelareapr.com, inspired by this http://www.levick.com, which my client particularly liked. Her immediate reaction was "Oh". That was it. Then a day later... "I LOVE IT!" That's my biggest problem - I've yet to meet anyone who didn't initially greet their new site with, well, surprise... somehow it's not what they expected, because they do have something in mind, albeit subconsciously. I kept this client's response as I thought it was particularly enlightening: "It is like seeing the face of your baby for the first time - you need a few seconds, or minutes or even days to really get to know it and appreciate it. I did have a vague idea of what it would look like, because I was imagining the Levick grey, red, etc.... but the eye, the pics in general were a surprise and it takes a moment for you to come round to it." Another thing I've learned is that everyone agrees that simple, uncluttered, easily-navigable sites are best. What they really mean is that every other site should be simple and uncluttered - theirs should have a WOW factor, so that it stands out from the crowd. That's why I'm now learning Flash. What a wonderfully friendly forum this is - I'm looking forward to being a frequent visitor. I'm a CSS addict - got hooked on the stuff just over a year ago but I still have much to learn. There are times when I've laboured for hours over a knotty CSS problem, and it's great to know that I can come here for help; also there's nothing that pleases me so much as being able to help others. I did join a certain well-known CSS forum, but I never posted anything. I was quickly put off by the treatment meted out to a newcomer, who asked a simple question and provided the relevant snippet of code, but the poor sap omitted to include the doctype... "Why didn't you read the forum guidelines or stickies? Do you think I just wrote that to bump up my postcount?" He didn't return, and neither shall I. This forum is a breath of fresh air in comparison, and I already feel at home just wandering through the posts. I would love to offer up some of my templates, and I'd be delighted if anyone finds them useful. Marie
