What am I doing wrong in CS3 dreamweaver? Very basic!

Featured Replies

Hi guys, first post and hopefully a real easy one for you experts. Im a complete n00b and am struggling with Dreamweaver CS3

Here is what Im doing and whats going wrong.

Ive created a blank page that has a frame 200 pixels wide down the left hand side. I have called this navigation.

The right hand frame I have called maindata.

The page that brings them together is saved as homepage.

For now, all I have in the mainddata frame is a heading and 1 picture.

In the navigation frame I have inserted a spry vertical menu with just 4 buttons and no off shoot menus.

When previewed in firefox, it looks as I want it to.

I then created a 2nd page with the same layout. I kept the navigation pane identical linking to the original. This 2nd page has a heading a 5 pictures.

I then set the menu link on one button to point to this 2nd page.

Heres the problem.

When I preview in firefox, the homepage displays fine. When I click on the link button, nothing appears to happen BUT if I right click on it and select open in new tab, the picture page is displayed correctly!

What am I missing here? Im trying to do this from scratch with just CS3, a book and my brain but im struggling!

TIA

Failing that (although I really would like to learn why its not working ) how would I go about creating a fixed menu on the left hand side with all data and pics to its right? I deally I want the menu to stay in one place whilst the viewer would be able to scroll up and down the main part of the page to the right.

<a href="url" target="billybob">link</a>

That's the code you should be using to get your links in your left frame to open in your right frame. Assuming, of course, that your frame is called Billybob. Substitute it as necessary. :)

Do you absolutely have to use frames for this site? Frames have more cons than pros, to be honest.

Thanks Rachael, will try that!

I dont need to use frames, I was trying to work out how I could get the menu to stay in oneplace on the screen whilst all the other data was shown in a pane to the right. Also, it looked easier to just have to code the menu once and then just link to it on each page...there is probably a much easier way of doing it but I am just learning and CS3 is what I had.

Thanks for your other post btw, will look at that site you recommended and see if I can get my old brain into gear an teach it something new!

Appreciate your time and help!

Quick edit, should the code look like this? <li><a href="url" target="pictures.html">Pictures</a> </li> where pictures.html is the page I want it to open and Pictures is the text shown on the button?
