March 7, 20179 yr I am looking to build a website. I built a few websites back in the day when were were still using dos, and lynx and were still using BBS services. Who remembers those?? So now that I have dated myself, I consider myself a newbie. I will have plenty of newbie type questions along the way. I hope this is a safe site for newbies.
March 10, 20179 yr Hi, I'm a newbie to web programming. In the last three weeks or so, I've started learning Wagtail and Django, with a view to putting a number of projects together. I know very little about HTML, less about HTML5, and almost nothing about CSS. I chose Django partly because I like Python, and partly because the clean design and very favourable reputation of Django really appealed. So far, I've put together a basic development system using Mercurial and SCM-Manager for source control, NGINX and UWSGI for the web server and python backend, and MariaDB for the database engine. This is all running on a Pi 2 running ArchLinux, so it's not exactly the fastest thing in the universe, but the projects I have in mind will be based on something similar, if they ever make it off the drawing board.

I'm from the Age of BBC Micros, so I remember DOS. I started getting into UNIX not long after that, although my first ever access to the internet was via a Demon dial-up and a 386SX desktop running Mosaic, Windows 3.1 and the Clarkson packet drivers. It really messes with my head to think how much more powerful current computers are in comparison.
March 17, 20179 yr Author So here is my first question. How do I take an image and make it my background image? SHould be straightforward, and I used to do it in HTML several versions ago, but now there are sections, and CSS style sheets and all that other stuff. My second question. I need to do a drop down menu that gives a user a choice of quite a few other links. For instance, a drop down menu that has a list of chapters that link to corresponding pages. Man, am I rusty at this stuff. I paid $20 to take a UDEMY course on HTML but he keeps losing me.. maybe its my age.. And finally, how do I subscribe to this forum so I get an email indicating any responses? Edited March 17, 20179 yr by Slim1950
