November 4, 201510 yr This question could possibly be placed in any number of places (WP, SEO, Server side etc.), but permit me to add it here.... I am giving Wordpress another try and am beginning to learn its quirks. Next challenge - server side seo without direct access to the htaccess file. Upon scanning the site with GT Metrix, it gave me two suggestions: remove querie strings and specify a vary: enable encoding. I found plugins for both but the later (zendy speed) doesn't seem to make an improvement in that area. Upon a search, they are telling me to make the change in htaccess, but the host has locked it down (GoDaddy). GoDaddy also doesn't seem to tolerate the other popular cache plugins (WT3, WP Super Cache, etc.). Is there a hidden plugin that can improve this area for my site? All other areas seem to be ok. GZIP, Leverage Cache, etc. Second question regarding images: Why would GTMetrix say my images are properly optimized but Google Page Speed does not? Just curious. Images were optimized via Kraken prior to upload and again via WP Smush plugin. Please advise and thank you for putting up with my WP questions. Images were optimized via Kraken prior to upload and again via WP Smush plugin. Google Page Speed moans at me for this too, and it's often nonsense. If you're getting a reasonable file size after compression, then you should be good to go. Ignore Google trying to ensure every image is 1% or 2% smaller, there are things that have a much bigger impact on performance than file sizes, and at the very least you're making efforts to make sure the images are properly optimised. That 1% is probably only a few hundred bytes.
