Best place to buy a used/cheap PC

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Having a lot of problems at the moment with my pc.

Before it dies completely, I want to find a replacement.

My question is this:

Where is the best place to buy a tower with XP on it.

I don't need any peripherals, just the tower.

Not too concerned with spec and I'm willing to consider used/refurbished.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be very grateful!

Oh, and I don't want to use ebay; the last 2 items I bought off there failed to work properly.

Cheers

Why not build one yourself?

It isn't as hard as people think and you can make them pretty cheap. Or if you want cheaper, buy one of the really cheap Dell's. Dell lose out on money from them because they sell them cheaper than they can make them. I know Dell aren't the best but a deal is a deal.

Cheers for that James.

I'd love to have a go at building my own but time is of the essense and I want one yesterday

Perhaps when I have a bit more time on my hands?

In the meantime I shall check out Dell as you suggested; I've used them before and found them to be fine tbh.

Ps where would you go to buy the individual components and build one yourself? (just for future reference)

Are there any decent 'how tos' that you know of on the net?

Thanks again :)

I'll agree with jamest here. There are some great offers to be had on the Dell website. Can often pick up £99 ones! If you also give them a call and explain what you're after you maybe able to get a bargain there too.

For building yourself, try Scan.co.uk.

They have a pretty good selection at a competitive price.

My brother got a cheap £150 PC off Dell which is fine as a home media server. Just planed another 500GB hard drive in and it's done.

Elan, have a look in Loot or your local classified ads - you may be able to pick up a bargain in your neighbourhood... plus you get to see it working first, not like ebay.

There's always gumtree, too.

Ebuyer.com, Scan.co.uk, there are a couple of other good places for getting components. I won't suggest anywhere to buy a rig from because I would never recommend it and I have never done it :pp

When I bought my new rig a few weeks back, I ordered it on thursday afternoon, it arrived friday morning, had it built and running by Friday evening. That's with Ebuyer.

It really isn't all that tough! The toe bone's connected to the, foot bone. The foot bone's connected to the, ankle bone. The ankle bone's connected to the, leg bone... etc.*

I'll let you know if its any good.

a winner in my book :)

As good as they are, if you have a problem they become a nightmare and after using them for a few years there prices are generally beaten by scan and ebuyer, but they do have a better range of performance hardware.
