I have few questions about wordpress that i think will boost my developing skills, i was focusing on front end and learned a lot but this thing i cannot understand.

 

I am deeply grateful for any concrete answers or guidelines or terms to search for!!

 

I will ask my questions on the example of Salient wordpress theme.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1.) First question is about home page. In wordpress I need to set home page to be one of my pages and then write some text in page but how do they make front page and first element to look like this?

 

 

 

2.) Second question is also about home page. So in this theme they have more regions of content. How did they set that on homepage and
how they control it? They have image gallery, random counters, text blocks, how??

I think that depends on what approach you want to take to the theme of the site.

 

You could create a template that has all this in and then use that as the front page of the site. This could cause issues as the content wouldn't be editable unless you change the template code. But on the other hand it means that the client cannot delete all the content from the page. There are plenty of other reasons this way could be good/bad.

 

Since you are using WordPress you could look at getting a plugin like advanced custom fields This is a plugin that allows you to add additional content areas and more to the page and then you call them in the templates. Again there are reasons using this could be a good or bad thing.

A lot of new themes now that Ive seen are adding different tabs for different functions; Ive seen a projects tab, a slider tab (this would probably be the references in the theme in question) along with the already existing functionality. Heres what I would think each item is: the three upper text paragraphs - text widgets, the counters - added functionality in a theme options page, the quotes / references slider - as said previously a slider tab, the widgets with call-to-action buttons - added functionality in theme options page and finally the four extras type widgets - a projects tab perhaps?

Hope this helped, the above are just what I assume each bit of the theme is, to add this to your theme you would have to look up the wordpress documentation and figure it out or find some tutorial somewhere that explains it all...

Honestly, I think the easiest way to learn and understand WordPress is to just keep doing it.

 

Firstly anything you can do in HTML and CSS so I would suggest creating the site (more or less) in HTML and CSS. You can then gradually convert it to WordPress templates. There are probably tons of tutorials for doing so if you Google "HTML to WordPress tutorial" (pick a recent one). After you get the basics down you can find better and more intuitive ways to make content editable. Like Junior said Advanced Custom fields is very helpful for a site like the above.

I think this is a responsive wordpress theme, You can find thousands of tutorials on how to make wordpress responsive themes.
