Right, I have been thinking whether to learn server stuff and cms, but am a bit daunted by it all.

 

Can someone please explain it to me, or point me in the direction of where I can EASILY learn about it.

Hi Helen bets place to start is here every one is helpfull i have been learning php mysql for a month after passing my html exams i have a few tutorials you can copy and paste for contact forms if you wish also try www.killerphp.com also the best place ever is you tube and enter php or mysql tutorials you will need apache setting up as a testing server let me i prefer a program called wamp but there are others

 

its quiet easy to do the basics after a month i have a working chat room which took about 4 hours to get working from scratch with a login so i dont think i did to bad if you are ok with html them am sure you will have no problems with php good luck

I guess I have come at it from a different angle. Necessity meant I had to research, test, learn and implement a CMS system in the space of about 1 month. It really did help me to get to grips with things and it was a real project with a deadline. Talk about in at the deep end. Anyway, it all went well and I learnt a lot.

 

What I think is truly important with any kind of learning is to have a proper project with which to implement the things you learn. Even if its just a personal site, you will learn more by putting things into practice than you will from just reading books, tutorials, etc. Im not saying those resources aren't good, they were invaluable to me as I learnt, but implementing a real-world project taught me more.

 

Theory IS imprtant, but sometimes learning something can get a bit stale, a bit dry - you need some way to bring together everything you are learning as you go along, or you will lose interest. Just my opinion of course!
