As a creative professional how many of these do you take out? Do you use them enough to justify the monthly spend? Do you ever wish you could find a plan you could afford or in some cases a "something for nothing" solution?

 

Noone?

I have a few currently active. I'm quite good at deactivating services I no longer use, that's why I prefer monthly payments than yearly. Sometimes, I use something for a month or two and pause the subscription.

 

Here are the ones that I always renew (on a monthly basis):

• Hosting
• Spotify (essential)
• Web font services
• Teuxdeux
• Github

I think all that comes to around £25 a month, which isn't a great deal considering I knocked my phone contract on the head. All that is basically one round of drinks over here.

 

Obviously there's yearly subscriptions like domains. I also purchase resources, books and software throughout the year. It's never been a financial burden for me, more of an extension of something I enjoy, I justify it like spending money on improving a hobby.

Indeed, one of these days I'll find a service I'll take an interest in and more importantly can aford. I've had teamtreehouse bookmarked ofor a long time but haven't taken out a premium service with them yet. I'm excited about joining though once I've gotten through the Codecademy tracks.

 

Mockflow was one of the ones I was talking about, for wireframing. I was very impressed with it's interface and its intuitivenss but it's still a little out of my pricerange at least for the time being.

They certainly accumulate and then they become like a gym membership: you have every intention of using it so you keep paying your fees but never use it.

 

Same here as Jack. I have numerous subscriptions, though the ones related to this field is mostly type. I'm not interested in the Creative Cloud payments and I also don't use stock image subscriptions - they can really eat into your budgets if you aren't using them properly.

 

I hear good things about Code Academy. One day, perhaps one day I'll look into JavaScript and/or PHP in further depth. On that note...

Which is exactly what I want to avoid. If I invest in something I want to make full use of it! Every penny is precious at the moment.

 

Code cademy is good. It's taught me a lot though and I'm going through the Ruby track at the moment and it's quite demanding (for me anyway) and sometimes I don't pick up as much as maybe I should.
