Renaming the wp-admin folder

Featured Replies

Hi, I've had a dabble in WordPress recently as a replacement for my custom built CMS's.

Has anyone successfully renamed /wp-admin to something like /admin or /cms?

/wp-content seems pretty easy to rename, but the /wp-includes and /wp-admin seem pretty rigid.

There seem to plugins that redirect but you still end up at /wp-admin and there are tutorials but none for the latest release (3.6).

Any help gratefully received :)

Chris

you can change all the instanses of wp-admin in the files.... all you need is notepad++

backup first.... but problem is you will not be able to install plugins or do updates or you will have to the changes again...

how ever there are plugins out there that will change the directory for you.

Thanks, I should have said that I meant without hacking the original core of WordPress.

I have done it the way you suggest as a test previously but it's not as easy as the plugins, wp-content, uploads folders which are all editable via the wp-config.php file.

No it's more for clients - they don't necessarily need to know it's WordPress that's hosting their website.

With /wp-admin/ it becomes painfully obvious.

@mantis, sadly all that plugin does is rewrite the initial call - nothing else, you still end up at /wp-admin

Ah well, I think it was more geared to security concerns. Personally I never try to hide Wordpress. Firstly it is very well know so there would be a lot of skinning to do and secondly, I don't think there is any shame in using it. Here is an interesting talk about hiding CMS' in general though, more for security : http://vimeo.com/53317254
