I am currently designing a website for my clan is a game... and I have noticed that when I have loaded the website up at work it is REALLY dark but when Im at home it looks fine.

 

Its all hosted locally so I acnt give a link to show you..

 

But is it just a case of making it all brighter? On my home laptop is looks perfect... but here at work I can hardly read the text... its insane how different it looks in sense of contrast/brightness... Is there a trick I could do to make it not look REALLY dark on some screens? I dnt want to lose my original design becasue it looks perfect on my laptop..

Are you on a Mac at home, by any chance? OS X often renders fonts slightly bolder, making them more readable in certain circumstances - this might be one of those circumstances. It all depends on the colour, the font, the background, etc..

 

If not, consider the screen quality - your work screen will likely be very cheap, offering poor colour depth and contrasts. That's about as far as my display knowledge goes, but there's fairly obvious differences across various display price ranges.

 

PS. Can't believe Runescape is still going?! I started playing that in about 2004-2005 I think!

Umm nah... I am running on windows 8 at home on my comaq laptop and running windows 7 on a desktop at work...

 

I am thinking if i just make the background a bit brither, it might make the whole thing look a bit brighter? I just need to make sure I keep the inital design in place...

 

nd Yeah, Its is its changed A LOT but i play it occasionally because of a clan im apart of. The clan makes it fun

The reason why might be what you said about quality, but I am not too worried about Why... its just a matter of how to prevent this issue if you know what i mean?

Perhaps font rendering/anti-aliasing has changed on Windows 8? I'm no expert on Windows, sorry!

 

Well, just try to make a stronger contrast between the background and the text in areas that you were struggling to read. Simple advice, I know, but if you're happy with everything else - why not just make a couple of simple changes?

 

Christ, I just looked at the website - those graphics bear no relation to what I played! Ha, I remember some of the stuff on there though - "Rune", "Dragon". I was never a member though, so didn't get any of the good stuff!

Yeah, i give it a play with it when I get home so I can go on photoshop. Thanks for advice. I think contrast is the key here Just brightening up the background should help I think, but ill play around with it.

and yeah, it is very different... and RS3 is coming out in the summerm, its gonna be a major graphical update.. cant wait

i know form my experiance, that windows 8 renders the pages 'zoomed out' more. When i switched from win7 to win8 all my pages were smaller on the screen.

 

What i will say is may your background is to dark behind the text, lighten up the background to create some constrast, that should fix it

 

didnt see the image to start.. I can say 100% your problem is the red.. RED + black dont mix, i just redid a clients website because the past devoloper put up a black background and red titles, lets say it was a eye strain! try a orange instead

if that fails try a blue, blue + black is sexy

How did you find an orange or blue instead of the red mate?

Hey. The IT guy in me says have you tried switching it on and off again and adjusting the contrast/brightness on both monitors, but the designer in me (having now seen you're using Photoshop) says to check your colour profiles in Photoshop. If you're only designing for the screen, you should try setting the colour profile to 'Monitor'. Mac and Windows render colour differently, so it's best to keep them as close as you can.

 

Probably irrelevant, but double check your swatches as well. Maybe you could link them here for us to check on our machines? I once made the mistake of doing everything in CMYK instead of RGB and wondered why it was darker than my comps. Doh!
