Does this job role exist?

Featured Replies

Hey, so I have been trying to explain to people what I enjoy doing / what want I to do for a job, but noone can tell me what the job role is called or of it actually exsists.

So basically, ill explain this best I can with some odd analogies too :)

I like to see things go through a process and see how they finish up. Let's say I was given and old bike to restore, I would enjoy making it look great and seeing the change. In a job sense, I like to see businesses go from nothing to something and also helping them get from a - b.

I have dabbled with importation and contact with Chinese suppliers etc and really enjoyed it. Would love to be like the middle man between businesses for this.

Not so good at explaining right now as on my phone but in a short sense...

Is there a job role, that's like business management / product sourcing all combined to one. Helping people through all the stages of their business from the very start?

Or would this be something I have to create myself? My ideal 'dream' would to be able to work for myself doing just this. People come to me with their ideas and I then them into reality, whether it's starting a website, brand, business or they have a product idea but don't know where to start so i sort out all the packaging, sourcing, pricing etc.

I know its probably one of those job roles that requires UNI qualifications, but just want to get an idea of a job role :)

Thanks for reading, I know it's an essay!

Sound like an investor to me?... Think of dragons den... They invest in a company with both Time and Money... Maybe this is the sort of thing you are looking for?

Im not too sure, but I hope this helps.

Yeah I was going to mention about doing what the dragons den do... Just without the money side!

Another variation of this, broadly speaking, is Project Management. The definition of the term is rapidly losing it's meaning these days as so many companies are giving titles to their staff to give them some sense of achievement. I've seen job descriptions for Project Managers where the salary can vary something as crazy as £40k.

The title varies from job to job but it covers the same thing. Some of the Project Managers I've worked for in the past have a had a university background but the majority of them were 'seasoned professionals' - having worked through the ranks since leaving school or ex-forces. That's just my experience, so don't take that as a university education is irrelevant.

It depends on the field you want to work in. That old saying of it's who you know comes into affect here :)

I don't know anyone haha, I'm trying to find some sort of job title or something so I can look into it more but as you say project management is a bit of a big net.

I'm more focused on the side if finding product suppliers etc. Doesn't feel like something I can just pop up and do myself :)

Definitely - project management is very broad. What kind of work are you thinking of? Thinking of getting out of the web design game?

to be honest, u can do what ever you want mate, to do this job, move to hk (like i am, end of this month) and start buying and selling in hk..... stuff is stupidly cheap 0.20p for iphone 4s bumber case that u can resell for £5+ each.. (over 400% profit right that)

I get to manage everything ;)

Well it's what I do on the side at the moment. I have used some suppliers and websites like alibaba.

I have found some products for some friends company's etc and looking into others for myself.

But I would really like it so that people with ideas come to me, and I find - communicate - talk pricing etc with suppliers.

I'm still defo staying with web design, but I feel this may be my niche possibly.

It might be a bit extreme to move abroad as a solution - plus it depends on the work you want to get involved with. That said, I have a couple of friends who export from the Far East and, as webcanvasdesign as said, there is a hefty profit to be made. They do it as a supplementary income however. Again, it depends of the work you want to get involved with.

I understand your original post and what it is you'd like to do, but the role would be significantly different if you were looking to work in start ups to say, the import/export trade. I don't know your age or education/work experience, but if you've got the drive, it might be a case of working your way up the ladder in a large firm, learning the ropes as you go along so that once you reach your target (profession wise), you'll have a good understanding of how the business as a whole runs.

That's the words I was looking for, import / export.

Shall do some research and see what's around me.

It might be worth getting involved in something like eBay, building up some contacts then from there expanding out and setting up your own ventures. It's very viable these days with emails, social media, etc... Before it was a case of phoning people up and knocking on doors to build up your network - now, forgive the cliche, but world really is at our doorstep :)

Spoiled for choice at the docks in Southampton. A lot of businesses there - especially cars!
