Thanks for taking the time to read this post and help me out.

We have finished the majority of the backend stuff for our E-Commerce site, although there is a bit of optimisation and a couple of a tweaks to go.

However, to me it feels like there is something not quite right with the design, layout or colour scheme used and I can't quite put my finger on it. Really I'm just looking for some ideas to make the website stand out a little and encourge customers to use it.

The site is live, although some offline stuff has been developed further the design is almost exactly the same (a couple of colour changes and alignments have been done offline).

I can't personally see much wrong with it, looks like an alright site. If I had to be picky the black menu doesn't seem to match the rest of the site and the banner. Also the asterisk in the section "next day delivery" doesn't look quite right. But that's about it and that is being picky!

I guess we could lighten up that black/dark grey menu. In my opinion, not sure if it's just from looking at it for so long, is that it's just too grey!

 

Unfortunately we need an asterisk, or to think of another line - otherwise customers assume next day, literally means next day even if it's a weekend/holiday!

You have used various shades of red but none of them really match up. For instance the main attention seems to be focused on the center of the website that contains the calls to action, then the header.

 

The contrast is too high between the subtle background and the large red headings, this makes them distracting and your eye can't follow the page as it normally would. Perhaps define the sections a bit more and give them some whitespace to allow the design to 'breathe' a little, this will improve the readability massively.

 

Also consider what other colours have been introduced from things like product imagery and icons, these can also play a part in affecting the readability as they sometimes draw unnecessary attention, if their not placed correctly.

This sounds like someone with a good eye for design and art, unfortunately I don't have that gift. That's why I deal with mainly the back end of sites.
