I'm going to be teaching Photoshop cs5 for web design

While I know how to do it myself , I don't know where to start with handouts, exercises , tutorials etc ! I suppose I should start with design theory, then move onto creating elements for pages such as buttons and then onto full page design , where could I get good notes and exercises for my students?

Depends on the age group, the general level of the class as a starter. I always found the first lesson was the 'winging it' one as such. Have multiple backups in case their level is above/below your expectations. Also in case they do your exercises too quickly! How long is the course? How many people? etc... Does make a difference. But general rule of thumb would be to get some understanding of what their goals are specifically.

 

You have a lot of technology at your disposal in theory. Visual aids are always good. Give them a research project to pick out design elements they would like to replicate but more importantly, why they want to do so.

 

There's a lot to cover really, but I cannot having a lesson plan - at least for three lessons in advance. I could be wrong, but I think Adobe has exclusive material for teaching and education in general. Might be something worth following up. Other than that, your first lesson could be teaching the workspace followed by tools then web conventions (72dpi, png, jpg etc...). Connect a laptop up to a projector to get them to follow on would be a good bet, but I have no idea what facilities are available to you.

It's a 12 week course , 9am to 4pm each day. First 5 weeks are graphics , then html /CSS for 5 weeks, then some careeer planning

 

Yes I'm gonna start with file types , intro to Photoshop with manipulating photographs.

 

But then I want to move onto design theory with exercises relating to web design. Then theres a project to redesign a bad site , then to plan and design their own site and to design a logo in illustrator

Photoshop has a wealth of resources for creating graphic elements.I find the best way to learn is through hands on exercises so the more you can give them the better. One of the best exercises I had to do when I learned photoshop involved selecting a number of quite different items from a prearranged file and rearranging them in a new design. This exercise involved the use of a number of different tools. I'll see if I can find the before and after file.

Thanks , I suppose what I'm trying to say is , somebody give me a big bundle of teaching resources so I don't have to spend the next two weeks preparing . Not that I'm lazy , I just do not see the point in reinventing the wheel when somebody else probably has already taught such a class.

ok here's what I'm thinking of a layout for the course:

 

1. Design Theory - Typography theory, colour theory, usability theory and grid based design - I've a number of powerpoints, handouts and videos on this.

2. Design - Have the students re-design a website using a mockup a design in photoshop of a company website - first assignment

3. Design - Second assignment is to create a new design for a company based on a specification - have another student evaluate the design, give critical feedback and have first student re-design based on the feedback

4. HTML / CSS - 1st assignment is to plan out building their own portfolio website with wireframes etc.

5. HTML / CSS - 2nd assignment is to build their own portfolio website , and ensure is adheres to web standards and design principles

 

so, what I need is a good set of notes / videos explaining grid based design using Photoshop, and then a continuation of this into building the websites in html/css

really depends what you want to do mate? i see so many people going ''im going to learn photoshop'' but in reality what they actually need to learn is illustrator

 

Also, web design is a contantly changing variable, its design concepts are never the same and alwasy shifting. i would recommend against going to do a course to learn how to do stuff.

alot of college matierials are out dated and although u can learn some cool stuff, wouldnt u rather learn at your pace and earn some money in the process?
