Interactive Product Configurator

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I'm potentially going to be working with a client that builds a range of furniture and wants some sort of interactive product configuration interface built into the site. So for example you could select a chair and in real time (using AJAX?) select different upholstery colours/patters and see it demo's on screen.

This kind of facility is pretty common on car sites where you can "build" your own car by selecting the model/interior/colour/wheels etc etc e.g: http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/#/new/polo-v/configure/837/paint/

Obviously that example is really "high end" and wouldn't be necessary for my client. But the essence of it is right. If anyone has any ideas or experience of building something like this, I'd love to hear about it.

At it's most basic level it might be a case of using select menus or thumbnails to load seperarate images of the different components, so in the example above it might not be a complete chair but one image for chair type, one for wood, one for upholstery, one for feet etc etc

Do it the latter way easily with css/images/jq. Wish I had the link but it was done like that on a bike site I was on recently, worked well.

Or, there's Flash.
