Im about to start learning ruby and am going to get 'The ruby programming language' book to act as definitive guide to the language for me. I am also looking to get 'Agile web development with rails' and i wondered if anyone had any experience with this book in terms of learning rails and would they recommend it?

 

I would be interested in hearing other peoples journey on learning ruby and/or rails as well.

 

Personally, i find ruby to be quite straight forward, logical and easy to learn, does anyone else think that?

Why not learn PHP instead ? PHP is considered to be faster, more stable, has more documentation, a bigger number of developers and is more widely available on hosting services.

I have been doing PHP for about a year now and was just interested in ruby itself and ruby on rails as a side project. I do find the the language and framework much more exciting, i dont know why though. I am becoming a bit bored of PHP a bit but still understand its need and what it provides.

matter fact i take back what i said i think twitter was built out of ruby lol i think i read so it deff has some potential

Yes it was originally, but i dont know about now - maybe something to do with java? I remember hearing a lot about ruby on rails and the whole scaling issue in regards to twitter.
