Featured Replies

Ok, i have been looking through some sites and left some feedback, and thought i would jump in and see what people think of my designs.... quite scary doing this, but better to know than to be ignorant to others views.

My site is here:

www.treendsolutions.co.uk

(im going to be re-doing this soon but any suggestions on my current design for improvements would be great)

and a few other sites:

http://www.naughtycherrysextoys.co.uk/ (admin, if i shouldn't have this link here, please let me know and i will remove right away)

http://www.newforestmotorco.co.uk/

cover your class online (.co.uk) without spaces etc... didnt want this to be crawled

open to all feedback good and bad :S

These sites are professional, but lack a certain eye-catching quality. Granted they are for businesses, but there is something that is lacking that will keep people on the page. With the exception of the toys site, the others seem a bit bland, and could use a bit more pizazz. Other than that though, the sites are professional and clean. Good job overall.

These sites are professional, but lack a certain eye-catching quality. Granted they are for businesses, but there is something that is lacking that will keep people on the page. They aren't professional, they're amateur. If this is what people consider to be professional, and by that term I assume extremely high quality, then I personally think standards have dropped massively.

Before anybody jumps down my throat, I'm not completely rubbishing them, but they are lacking. This is the quality of work I'd personally expect from someone still learning and has only been doing this for perhaps 3-4 months.

My main gripe is the colour schemes. They're rubbish. It's all dark greys, and then lurid logos. In fact, I'm not sure any of these websites have a colour scheme at all. They're just...grey, but not in a nice way.

The car website has a flash slider - why? The exact same effect can be achieved with jQuery. By using Flash, the site is going to look naff on iPads/iPhones because the slider won't work. You shouldn't use Flash unless it's necessary, and in this case it isn't.

The layout of the car website is generally OK. There's some rough edges though, the typography is bland, and the text in the footer just looks scruffy and odd, it needs to be given a bit more space and room to breathe. Think about using horizontal navigation in the footer to tidy it up a bit.

The Cherry website again suffers from all these bland, nasty greys and horrible gradients. The rule with gradients is to keep them extremely subtle. Yours are just garish and overdone. For a website selling sex toys, I'm expecting something exciting, vibrant, flashy, cool. But this is so grey and dull it really doesn't sell anything to me.

The navigation on the left is just ridiculous. Even if the client insisted on all those options, there are far better ways of displaying them then just a long, ugly list.

To summarise, for someone only recently starting out in web design these are not bad. They are pretty solid websites. However, they are extremely average. They don't interest me, and they don't engage the user. This is hugely down to the drab greys that dominate both sites, I think you really need to do some research on colour schemes employed by similar websites - look at Love Honey for example. Then see how you can use similar colour schemes to improve your designs.

The sites are also quite cluttered and untidy looking, they just look a little messy. Think about how you can utilise typography, colour, layout, and other design aspects to create cleaner looking designs.

I think you have a while to go before you can earn the "professional" term - but you are on your way and this is a decent start - so please don't be disheartened by my comments. You need to be told where you're going wrong in order to do better - and if you can improve on these pointers then you should get much better! Good luck!
