Is copying someones keywords illegal?

Featured Replies

Got a thought! I have a website that I want it to appear in the same/similar search results as the other sites.

It is illegal to go to their page source, and use the same keywords? I would think that it 'would' not be as it's not something that cannot be their IP or copyrighted - however..

it's probably frowned upon..

But any ideas or views on this would help so I can sway on the majority vote, and want to ensure i'm not doing anything wrong..

No, of course it isn't illegal to use the same keywords as somebody else. Only question is why?

If you are trying to compete with an already existing site for the exact same keywords then the search engines will always (99.9% of the time) favour the older domain.

On the flip side, every web designer in the world is trying to rank for "web design" or "web designer", so no reason that you cant use the same keywords.

An afterthought: Are you intending on placing these keywords in a meta keyword tag in your head? If so that will get you very very little help in search engine ranking with the big players as they no longer see the keywords meta tag as a reliable source of infomation on what the site is actually about (blame the spammers for that).

If, however, you are simply going to be optimising your pages for said keywords, by using well written content and meaningful keywords/phrases then that would be much more beneficial to you in the long term.

Well I have individual pages on my website that I would like to be more associated with certain websites, so ideally they rank close to them, not necessarily above them.

I am then looking at the keywords and using them throughout that pages content, so hopefully they all appear close/together when searched.

As long as it is written well, not spammy and feels natural then I can't see a problem. Like I say, in every niche you have thousands/millions of sites competing for the same keywords anyway..

Well then I shall continue with what I'm doing :) Cheers roothost!

If someone is copying then I think, its harming his/her website too, This is legal n illegal I don't know, but it should be illegal and come under law too.

Why would it be illegal and why should it? By becoming illegal to use the same keywords as somebody else would mean only one person/website would be able to use the keyword 'web design', anybody else targeting that keyword would then be breaking the law.

My oh my loool

NO.....

no no no noone has write to copyright the keywords.. anyone can use any keyword..

except registerd trademakr or copyrighted material but keywords cannot be copyrighted there's no rule in constitution for this..

£25,000?? On what grounds?

Surely keywords are what you compete with online. As long as you avoid Trademarks and brand names, I don't see how it can be illegal?

Willing to be proved wrong!!

Copying keyword is not illegal rather than copying content of other website. If your website provides same service as your competitor do than it is not spamming and illegal .
