would anybody mind having a look at my new site? it's my first attempt at a personal portfolio website.

some feedback on the design would be great, and also if the html / css is ok (i'm sure the javascript isn't, it's my first bash at it). do you think there's much more i need to learn before i can start looking for paying customers?

Your design certainly is OK - I think it could be better though.

My main change to make if it were mine would be to either remove the gradient from the content area, or make it more obviously 2 columns.

I like your copy, but I thought it was ever so slightly too modest. You have good coding skills, and your design skills are catching up, so don't be afraid to say!

Also, it's very informal - again not necessarily a bad thing, but if you are presenting yourself as a web designer you may find it's more effective to make it more obvious. Kirsty's Homepage as a header doesn't say enough IMHO.

It's way better than my first websites though.

I can imagine it would put customers off. If I were in the market for web design, I would probably skip over this site simply because you sound so unsure of yourself. Without selling yourself, there doesn't seem to be much point to the site unless you want it to be a personal site rather than a business one. At the moment, I'm getting mixed messages.

 

What might be a better approach is to work out what exactly you have to offer. For example, you might aim at small companies that want to get a foot on the web but don't necessarily want anything fancy. You can then sell yourself confidently to that market. The confidence thing is important, though.. customers want to be sure that you can handle the work they give you. If they think the project may go wrong in your hands, they'll go with someone else.

yeek! how embarrassing i thought i'd got rid of that before i posted it up, it was just my colours for headings and backgrounds and stuff because i kept losing them in gimp. but thanks for the tip and for being nice about my code

No worries, I've been known to leave some development code in my websites before — it happens to everyone.

yes, i must apologize for the content, it wasn't really a serious website but because i've never had any feedback before i have no idea if my graphic design is feasable or if my code was is any way acceptable, so your advice is very much appreciated.

 

hopefully my next one will be more serious and designed to attract customers rather than criticism, and then maybe when my portfolio's a little bigger i can start looking for work
