Hi everyone, as you can tell from my username, i'm new to this web design stuff but have been trying hard to learn HTML and CSS (haven't got into PHP, Javascript or anything like that yet). I learned the starters of web design by watching the Lynda.com Dreamweaver CS5 Essential Training course. They are very helpful if there are any other newbies here. I do know Photoshop and Illustrator but also want to learn how to bring that together and design great websites.

I want to get the hang of the basics of web design before I jump into PHP etc. so at the minute, I am just using CSS and XHTML.

I tend to be a fast learner and have always loved design (though i'm not the most creative around :) ) so it will be great getting to know all of you. :D

Hello,

nice to meet You. Lynda is amazing source of knowledge, I also used to buy a single year membership and can say it gave me some basic info about programs like Illustrator or InDesign.

PS: don't use xHTML, it's HTML5 time ;)

Yeah, I love it!

Is HTML5 like xHTML in that you need a closing tag for all elements etc. or it is a completely different game?

I used this resource (and I think a couple other ones.. but I don't have them bookmarked anymore) to figure out the differences in HTML5.

But it's a whole different beast than just requiring end tags. Stuff like being able to create table-less, div-less webpages. It's significantly more semantic than the previous versions. E.g., if something is part of the header of a page, you wrap it in <header>. If it's a nav element, you wrap it in <nav>. It's magical! :)

Also, welcome! You joined at the same time as me, so hopefully we can learn together! :)
