Large image uploads PHP

Featured Replies

Customer driving me mental on this one.

Built a site that allows the public to upload images, but of course they all uploading massive images (35mb the last one was attempted). I've got some script that returns a friendly message if the image is larger than 2mb, but it has to actually upload first to activate this.

Does anyone know of any scripts or solutions to this problem as I've explained what is happening to the customer about 100 times now and I'm ready to throw in the towel with them.

I know its virtually impossible (right?) to find the file size before it uploads so I really cannot see a solution to this.

The alternative i can think of is somehow capturing that the server is going to fall over and redirect to a friendly error page instead of the bog-standard PHP server response?

Any help please?!

you can use JS but that can be disabled of course.

If it were me and there is a friendly message and I'd explained to them 100 times then there wouldn't be a 101th time. Just ignore them. If they can't read or understand what you're telling them then there's no hope. Maybe say to them that you will start billing them for your time every time they ask?

Thanks Zed - I've read of a few JS options, but each seems to vary in degrees of how well it works (i.e. not very well to plainly doesnt work!)

There is some 'file object' solutions too that only work in IE6, which again is no good.

i think there is no simple solution to that, and JS won't help you too much, first of all if you use php for download it has its own limitations. If i were you i would try webdav/ftp and/or java applet.
