I am having trouble with optimising images through photoshop. I use "Save for Web and Devices" and no matter how I configure the settings and which file type I use, I can't seem to stop my images losing a lot of their color.

 

Could I please get some suggestions on how I could optimize my images differently, or what I am doing wrong?

What version are you using?

 

Check your image mode (make sure its not in 8-bit mode or something). Unless thre's a good reason, avoid using indexed mode for working.. just use RGB.

 

If you're saving as a gif, make sure you have a large enough colour palette (you can choose anything up to 256 colours, I think it is)

 

If it's a photo, save it as a jpg. Use 100% quality for now.. if that looks good when it's saved, you can try lowering it. I tend to use around 75%.

 

If all else fails, post up your pics.. the original and the saved for web version. It'll give us something to go on. Just kinda shooting in the dark at the moment.

I am using version CS3, I had my image mode set at RGB 8bits.

 

I changed to 32 bits but cannot now use the "Save for Web and Devices" option. I changed to 16bit and used this option and it seems like it has improved.

 

I will upload the results.

For JPG I sometimes use 60% for more optimizing ...

It not really differs so much from the 100%.

I think jpg_opt_high_75percent.jpg is much better to use ...

Do you think you could take a look at the original .pdf the images were in. It should give you a better idea of the color loss I am experiencing.

Is this as good as I can get optimized images or can I get them closer in color to the original pdf?

I'm getting an error downloading that PDF.. when I open it, it's corrupted or not a valid pdf file.

 

Out of those pics you posted, png-24, jpg 75% and 8-bit jpg seem ok. The lack of colour depth in the other two are pretty noticeable. Any of those three would probably be fine if users aren't going ot see the original.

I'd still go with png_24, jpg_opt_high_75 or8bit_jpg. Can't really compare it to the original PDF image though, because of the size difference.. it's not really comparing like to like. Any differences are pretty minimal, though, you could safely use any of them.

 

Quick note - on the PDF, there's a spelling error - "Our services inclulde.."
